the last 12 months and the various challenges we managed to overcome along the way, and, at the same time, look forward to what the next year may have in store. Despite all the obstacles that to appear all too frequently in business these days, retailers in particular, seem to find a way through thanks to their creativity and experience. Those that have been around the industry for a while will remember the various financial crises and resulting economic turbulence they produced over the years, forcing businesses to refocus and realign just to survive. Unfortunately, too many have fallen victim to these financial pressures and had to close, but the ones that have navigated their way through have come out the other side, stronger, leaner, more resilient and much better placed to confront whatever the next set of challenges may be, the latest being the increase in business rates.

The start of a new year provides the opportunity to look back at what we achieved over

The government’s decision to give pubs a 15 per cent business rates discount while excluding independent retailers is a “poor decision based on politics rather than what is good for the local economy,” according to Bira, and I must agree. Let’s hope the government listens to these concerns and either offers retailers a discount, or makes another of its infamous U-turns. In the meantime, we’ll focus on more positive news, such as the return of the DIY Week Awards this May. Entries
