2026 predictions Jason Burns of Shurtape looks at the year ahead for paints and finishes.
January always brings predictions for the year ahead.
One of my favourites, of course, is the predicted interiors and decorating trends, as these can, and do, impact the way our products are used - so it’s interesting to see the trends that brands and designers are suggesting will be popular in 2026. While Dulux Colour of the Year is a calm relaxing white, the majority of predictions seem to sway the other way.
The most popular trends being discussed for 2026 are all about colour and comfort. Bright palettes, interesting textures and larger than life furniture and designs will aim to bring warmth, character and confidence to homes across the UK. We are expecting to see curved forms in our furniture, natural materials like wood and lots of heritage mid-century pieces (which are naturally curved and stylish). Tactile fabrics, a touch of glam and gloss and lots of biophilic natural accessories will be order of the
day, along with earthy, spicy tones, jewel paint colours and a complete move away from the popular base grey shades to beiges and warmer neutrals. Interesting paint effects have been cited by a number of designers as a big trend for 2026. We are looking at the opposite of minimalism: maximalism. Circus-inspired décor (bold stripes and sculptural silhouettes) is predicted to rise, as well as cost effective solutions and approaches. This is great news for retailers and manufacturers of paint as well as painting and tools, including FrogTape, as it can help the user add interest, for a relatively low cost. FrogTape has long been known as one of the world’s leading decorators’ tapes, thanks to our unique PaintBlock® technology, which reduces and prevents paint bleed across a range of surfaces. Loved by professionals, it helps decorators deliver the best possible results for their customers, whether
it’s using FrogTape’s Pro Grade Blue Painters Tape, High Bond Exterior Tape, or one of the original Delicate or Multi Surface Painters’ Tapes. And it also helps homeowners, giving them the confidence to create designs themselves. Thanks to a wealth of inspiration on social media, a glut of genuinely good quality thick paint on the market in a range of brilliant colours, and reliable decorating tape and other tools, end users are heading into stores to buy the kit they need to create stripes and other patterns themselves. We work with a number of designers in this way - as demonstrated by maximalist style of Art + Believe and TV designer Siobhan Murphy – but we are also delighted to see end users share their own fantastic results online. Consumers look for inspiration online, sharing and watching reels on Instagram and Tik Tok and creating moodboards on Pinterest: 69% of shoppers trust product suggestions from influencers and 90% of consumers say UCG (user generated content) affects their purchasing decisions. The

he
hashtag #interiordesign on Tik Tok has well over 17 billion views while #homeinspo on Instagram has over 10million posts. And those circus-inspired stripes
are one of the most popular styles, as demonstrated by images shared by happy customers here. There’s clear evidence that homeowners will continue experimenting with eye-catching paints and throughout 2026. We’re excited to watch this trend evolve, bringing fresh creativity and personality to every space, and supporting our retail customers as it does.
Giving people the confidence and inspiration to try new styles themselves will be a big part of 2026. We offer advice and ideas on our site and through social media, and welcome working with retailers doing the same. By demonstrating how easy it is, we can continue to drive the paints and finishes sector as we head through the year.
