Bird fouling: What’s lurking within?
Bird fouling (also known as guano) looks unsightly, but it is also dangerous. It can pose a health and safety risk when it collects on fire escape stairs as persons can slip when it is wet, as John Stewart BSc from pest control experts Pelsis, explains…
The guano when washed into the gutter will encourage the growth of vegetation because it is rich in nitrogen, the vegetation will block the gutters causing them to back up causing building damage.
Bird guano will also attract insects such as flies that may spread pathogenic bacteria to foodstuffs, utensils and preparation surfaces. Bird fouling contains pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause respiratory diseases and in some cases death.
Some steps can be taken to
prevent birds roosting around your building, as follows:
Restrict the amount of foodstuff available to the bird population is one of the most fundamental actions. Ensure that bins are not overflowing, and limit bird feeding as birds will become accustomed to food being available and take up residence were possible. Keeping birds off the building can be achieved with the use of deterrent spikes, when birds are using an area for roosting or loafing. The spikes are simply fixed to an area with the use of a bonding agent; the area must be cleaned first to ensure the spikes bond to

the surface properly. When cleaning bird guano, it must be sprayed with a suitable biocide and cleaned with a scraper, nitrile gloves and a P3 mask must be worn to prevent the inhalation of pathogens. Clips are also available to fix the clips to the gutters to dissuade birds from landing.
Scaring birds can also be a means of dissuading them from roosting and landing in certain areas, the
reflect-a-bird system works by reflecting the sun light whilst spinning around it is versatile and can installed on roofs, gardens patios and boats. Both the spike and reflect-a-bird system are humane and cause no harm to the birds and they play an essential role in the ecosystem.
