May bank holiday will see Brits spend at least 10 hours doing DIY
The May bank holiday traditionally
marks the
beginning of DIY season and it’s likely that millions of Brits will either be calling in tradespeople or rolling up their own sleeves to get stuck into DIY jobs around the home and garden over the four day break. The average person is planning

to spend 10 hours on this bank holiday doing a mixture of DIY, gardening and decorating jobs a poll by Toolstation has found. Questioned on the top activities they would be carrying out over the weekend, the survey found that 63% would be working in the garden and 43% would be carrying out painting and
decorating jobs. Another 16% are planning to put up shelves, while 15% would be building furniture. The poll also found that an ambitious 17% plan to spend two days carrying out DIY jobs and 10% plan on investing three days on completing them. The survey
also found that the projects most likely to cause
problems for households over the period include plastering a wall (67%), laying a patio (31%), tiling a bathroom (28%) and fitting a carpet (25%). Toolstation spokesperson Greg
Richardson said: “The May bank holiday weekend is always one of the busiest of the year for DIY, with plenty of time to tackle important or much needed projects around the home. People are more likely to try something ambitious and our advice is to make sure you prepare well or get an expert in to help save you time and stress on the more challenging tasks.”

Toolstation, Northampton Saints and VIY help 24 young volunteers refurbish Southbrook community centre
saw the young volunteers fully
Toolstation, one of Britain’s fastest growing suppliers of tools, accessories and building supplies, has announced its latest tie-up with the Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) Community Interest Company, helping fund the young volunteers participation in refurbishing the Southbrook Community Centre, on Hood Road in Daventry. The final work on the project
renovate the centre with new rooms, finishes, decoration and features, enabling the centre to reopen and offer a wide range of services, including sport and physical activity, to the local area. Toolstation has also introduced the Northampton Saints Rugby Club charity, Northampton Saints Foundation, to the project, who have provided some of the young participants as part of their practical modules and players Tom Wood and Alex Waller joined in to help the participants with carpentry, building outdoor furniture for the cafe and kitchen space. Inspired by the rich heritage of Northampton Saints, the
Foundation inspires, supports and educates young people who are struggling within mainstream education,
low in confidence
and in need of direction to a positive future. The community centre was disused for many years and after campaigning by local residents the space has been saved. The new trustees of the space include Northamptonshire Sport and the local council. The
project saw 24
volunteers, aged between 14-24 years old, the majority of whom are disengaged or excluded from mainstream education and training, help to improve the facilities.
Speedy, the UK’s leading provider of tool and equipment hire, has launched a national multi-million-pound marketing and advertising campaign to promote tool hire across the UK. The hire giant’s ‘Make Every Job Easy’ campaign targets novice and pro DIYers alongside its core customer base of small traders to major construction contractors. The company aims for its industry-leading marketing campaign to raise awareness of its partnership with B&Q along with the benefits of hiring its extensive range of high quality tools and equipment for DIY projects. The campaign comprises
new creative
advertising and partnerships spanning across TV, radio, digital outdoor media, digital and social platforms, along with PR activity. Elements of the campaign
began rolling out across the UK on 4 April, with TV ads set to run nationally on ITV and Sky from 27 April. The campaign also includes national sponsorship of Radio X sports news, and a Breakfast Show promotion with Chris Moyles, which will give listeners the chance to win £3,000 cash towards their next big home improvement project.
Speedy’s multi-million pound push will encourage trades and avid DIYers to re-think their purchasing habits.
