Thames Path Ultra Challenge raises thousands to support home improvement industry


Rainy Day Trust CEO, Bryan Clover recently completed a gruelling 100km non-stop hike over a weekend to raise much-needed funds to help the charity continue to offer vital support to people within the home improvement, housewares and garden industry sector amid soaring energy bills.

Putney Bridge at the start of the Thames Path Ultra; a mammoth 100km non-stop hike to Henley on Thames, which must be completed in under 24 hours. He undertook the tough challenge in a bid to raise the money needed to support the Rainy Day Trusts ‘Let’s Save


Energy’ campaign, which gives away free low energy items – including LED lightbulbs and eco shower heads – to help reduce energy bills at a time when so many are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. The event was no small


endeavour and, despite 712 hikers starting the continuous challenge from Putney Bridge


Alan celebrates 50 years’ long service at Squire


Dedicated factory worker Alan Powers has celebrated 50 years’ continuous service at Wolverhampton based security manufacturer Squire. Alan was 16 when he joined


Squire in 1972 as a machine tool setter. At the time, the company was based in New Invention near Willenhall. Half a century on, Alan has known four generations of the Squire family,


which is headed today by eighth generation CEO John Squire. Since working at Squire, Alan has seen great change at the company, which then employed 350 people. He continues to work as a tool setter and doing general duties around the factory mainly for Squire’s high security Stronghold range. To mark Alan’s amazing achievement, he was presented


with a very special bottle of Macallan whisky by John Squire. “Right from the start I’ve been very happy working at Squire. One of the best things has been the friends I’ve made, and I met my wife Gill here.


I’ve been lucky to have stability at work, and still really enjoy my job,” said Alan, who is a keen football and rugby fan. One of Squire’s key strengths


is the quality of its team explained CEO John Squire. “Alan is one of many who have celebrated long service, many over 20 years and some over 40 years’ service. “We’re incredibly proud to have such a loyal and talented team of people, and some of the most experienced people in the business. We’d like to thank Alan for his incredible contribution and hard work.”

BHETA RECRUITS SOFIA SANCHEZ TO ITS MEMBER SERVICES TEAM


BHETA has appointed Sofia Sanchez to its members services team. As member services co-ordinator, Sofia will be focussing on member relationships in terms of answering queries and providing information updates. She will also be responsible for


marketing and networking opportunities for export and as well as with UK retailers throughout housewares, DIY, small domestic electricals and garden. Sofia will also be undertaking a similar role reference the Exclusively housewares, small domestic electricals and gift exhibition which is owned by BHETA. Sofia will be based at BHETA’s headquarters at Vyse


Street, Birmingham. Brought up in Birmingham, she previously worked as a legal assistant. Commenting on her new role at BHETA Sofia said: “I’m delighted to be joining the BHETA team in a role that is so varied and positive. With all the new consumers who have entered the market over the last two years, home and garden products remain a huge opportunity despite the current challenges. I can see that providing advice, retail contacts and the latest industry data to members is crucial which means that BHETA is a really important resource for members. Pugh comes with a wealth of UK and international experience, including 23 years in the power tools sector and as a partner in an electrical contracting business. He’s actioned senior roles for both DeWalt and Milwaukee respectively, across field marketing, sales, product management, and key account management, and in major global markets such as China, Hong Kong, and Dubai. As well as responsibility for the full marketing mix, range management and brand development, Mr Pugh will also be taking a senior lead on new product excellence as well as ensuring closer customer and end user alignment in the business’ activity.

HTA APPOINTS FRAN BARNES AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE


The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has appointed Fran Barnes as its Chief Executive, following the recent appointments of Directors of Public Affairs and Marketing. Fran Barnes joins the HTA from the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales (NFU),


where she has worked for over 10 years, first as Head of Strategic Communications and subsequently as Director of Communications. Prior to joining the NFU, she held a number of editorial roles on food and farming programmes at the BBC. Fran’s appointment follows the recent appointments of Jennifer Pheasey as Director of


Public Affairs and Elia Johnston as Director of Marketing, with the HTA strengthening its senior leadership team as the horticulture sector focuses on building upon the growth in the number of domestic gardeners witnessed during the pandemic and delivering the “Unlocking Green Growth” strategy launched in September last year, even more relevant in the current environment.


Commenting on her appointment, CEO of the HTA, Fran Barnes said: “I am delighted to be joining the HTA as Chief Executive. The horticulture sector delivers so much for the country’s economy, wellbeing and environmental sustainability, and the HTA’s reputation for supporting and representing its members – and the wider industry – is first class. I look forward to building upon its impact, as well as continuing to develop the services offered to members.”

on Saturday, as many as 162 withdrew from the race over the course of the day, mostly due to injury. Impressively, Bryan set off at 7:40am and crossed the finish line at Henley on Thames at 5:21am the following morning, having completed the punishing 100km hike in 21 hours and 41 minutes.


He placed 240th overall for


his route and was extremely proud


of this achievement, exclaiming: “When you consider that


I was certainly


old enough to be most participants’ father, I’m quite chuffed with that placing!”
