Look on the bright side
We seem to be lurching from one disaster to the next at the moment, with the latest government policy decisions hardly easing the cost of living crisis and the ensuing financial hardship for many. They have in fact served to cause chaos in the finance industry and turmoil in the housing and mortgage markets, to the point where many property sales and purchases are falling through at a record rate. Whether these policies will be enacted remains to be seen, but we have to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. With retailers already feeling the pinch and consumers tightening their purse strings, these are worrying times for many businesses. However we have to look at the positives that may result
from this latest scenario. If the Covid pandemic taught us anything, it’s that when people are forced to stay in their homes they tend to want to improve them and make the most of their living conditions. The same may hold true with this latest enforced lifestyle change for homeowners, with the old adage of ‘don’t move, improve’, coming to the fore once again. During the Covid lockdowns DIY became a popular national pastime, with confidence and skills increasing at a rate to match the increase in sales. Now, with a population that’s prepared to tackle a multitude of home improvement projects, both large and small, staying put and spending the cost of moving on improving could well become the preferred option. With recent half-year sales results from both Wickes and Kingfisher showing a steady increase, it seems the upward trajectory for the industry in general has continued. Now we face the real test to see if the next six months will also remain on the same course and we can enjoy some good news and a strong end to a challenging year.
