RANGE REVIEW: HOME SECURITY

SECURING PROPERTIES FOR SAFETY- CONSCIOUS CONSUMERS THIS WINTER

The latest Neighbourhood Watch Crime and Community Survey identified over two thirds of people are worried about becoming a victim of burglary. As homeowners become even more security conscious with the winter season fast approaching, Kerry Blackford, Senior Category Manager at ERA, discusses how retailers can support their customers in supplying hardware and smart security systems that deliver the highest standards of protection and personalisation.

with November and December the worst months for such crimes. In light of this, homeowners are understandably concerned about their home’s security, especially as we approach the winter season. Individuals who are experiencing heightened awareness of their properties’ security flaws are more likely to seek advice from retailers. upgrade of the lock on their front or back door is just one example of this. Encouraging homeowners to upgrade to a 3* cylinder complete with a BSI Kitemark should be simple to do, given that it is easy to achieve and is a cost-effective way to ensure a property’s entrance door can resist the various forms of attack commonly used by criminals. While a little more expensive than alternatives such as, 5 and 6 pin and 1* cylinders that offer lower levels of protection, a typical 3* cylinder is rigorously tested to ensure it can resist snapping, picking, drilling, and bumping attempts. In comparison, a 1* cylinder (the grade below) isn’t resistant to snapping and should be fitted alongside a 2* security door handle to achieve the recommended 3* solution. Lock snapping, according to the locksmith training academy KeyTek, is one of the most common methods used by thieves to gain unauthorised access to a property; used in almost one in three burglaries. With dark mornings and evenings ahead, a change in cylinders can give concerned homeowners that extra bit of reassurance.
