ON TEST: VICTORY COLOURS ECO PAINT

long existing formulations.

As

Victory Colours is a smaller company it is able to be dynamic and can quickly embrace new technologies, and improve its products quickly and effectively. The company is not afraid to change and innovate, indeed the company embraces innovation. It already made water-based paint

products, but decided that it wanted to produce a premium quality, technically superior product which contained the best

ingredients

BEAUTIFULLY T

WATCHING PAINT DRY…

Sallie Payne from the DIY Week team tests out the latest environmently-friendly Eco Paint from Victory Colours that is said to have a technically advanced formulation which gives outstanding resistance to stains.

his was the first time I had used the latest eco- friendly paint from Victory Colours. This independent family-run business

has been in the manufacturing and decorating industry for many years. It wasn’t until the owners started to have their own families that they became increasingly

mindful of

the environmental damage being done to our planet. When they brought these small people into the world they began to notice all the ‘nasties’ in everything from foods, packaging, carpets, vehicles… the list goes on. Victory Colours soon realised that although they cannot directly change the other things, except to avoid them or to lobby against them, they could actually do something to reduce the environmental impact of their own product range, and so ‘Eco Paint’ was born.

to stains, which if you have mucky kids around, you need as much stain resistance as possible. The same goes for the durability of the paint. It has great washability properties making it the perfect choice for families or households with pets. Opacity is high, which gives greater

coverage, meaning

that theoretically you need to use less of it which offers a financial (and time) saving.

Having now tried the paint myself, I would say Victory makes the most wonderful, eco conscious paint I have ever used, a bold statement, but true. I used the paint

on a front door, a tiled fireplace, a 1920’s wooden chair and a 1980’s pine cupboard. Victory Paint, unlike some, dries fast, covers in one coat, it’s very thick, and doesn’t show brush strokes. Therefore, don’t go back over it because you think it hasn’t covered, it certainly will have, remember it dries fast – touch dry in 25 minutes. No runs, no drips, splatter proof and virtually odourless, which is important when painting indoors, especially for children’s bedrooms. Let’s not forget to mention the application, the actual painting process. A gliding product, creamy covering and the texture is a perfect balance for a roller. However, cutting in it stays static on the brush to give fine sharp edges and a lovely professional finish.

The science bit

The paint industry has been subject to huge upheavals and change over the recent past. Changes in environmental regulations have brought about several product developments, where manufacturers have been required to reduce VOCs and solvents in paints and update

available, whilst stringently avoiding a whole host of unpleasant toxins including solvents, VOCs and phthalates, formaldehyde, and Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APEO), and heavy metals, amongst other things. There will always be trace elements of VOC sneaking their way in somehow, but Victory Colours is eliminating them every step of the way. So then what are VOCs? It’s the term that everyone is talking about but nobody really seems to know what it means. In simple terms VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds which are materials which evaporate readily from many common sources such as

exhaust fumes, cleaning

products, and within the Coatings Industry paints, stains, thinners and brush cleaners. When in sunlight or direct heat, such as radiators, VOCs can ‘react

with nitrogen oxides

to create ground level ozone and photochemical smogs’ (http://www. coatings.org.uk). This process can contribute to atmospheric pollution, so as you can imagine products containing VOCs are not the ideal to be breathing in on a daily basis. Paint from Victory Colours is as safe as possible for humans and animals, it has exceptionally low odour, and creates minimal contributions to the atmosphere, whilst still having great coverage and durability in a range of beautiful up-to-date colours.

The verdict…

I fell in love with the colours, they bring energy and brightness along with warm tones with lovely modern matt finishes. The names, such as Lucy Goose, Wild Swimming, Urban Fox and Greystorm are among the most imaginative names with paint to match the vibrancy. The packaging is either recycled,

recyclable or made from sustainable resources such as bamboo. With a price stability as there is less dependence on the fluctuating costs of materials such as oil, gas and resins, this is the paint that not only covers, but covers all aspects of customer requirements in today’s modern world.
