Beating the odds

Despite the cost of living crisis and new obstacles being thrown in our way, it seems the DIY, home improvement and gardening industry continues to buck the trend and out perform other retail sectors. It’s good to see the upward trend that started during the Covid pandemic continuing and just shows that when faced with rising costs and uncertainty, homeowners are more likely to stay put and invest in their homes. And it’s not just the big sheds that are benefitting, the smaller independent retailers are also showing a great deal of resilience, thanks to their creativity and ability to pivot more easily towards new areas and keep up with the latest industry trends, product developments and customer demands.

The well documented growth of the DIY industry is also attracting attention from other established retailers after a piece of the action and also newcomers looking to jump on and ride the wave of increased demand and business success. As we know, this doesn’t happen overnight and building a strong customer base takes a lot of hard work and effort in order to earn consumer trust. In the short term, some may see this increased competition as an unwelcome distraction, but if we take a more pragmatic and positive view, it’s good to be involved in a growth industry that’s attracting both new customers and suppliers that should help to drive the business forward and benefit all stakeholders in the long run. The garden centre industry is also benefitting from another new crisis with consumers looking to start growing their own salad and veg due to the current shortages caused by bad weather and poor harvests in Europe. You can read more about that and keep to date with all the gardening industry news in the latest issue of Garden Centre Update magazine that’s bound into the centre of this month’s issue.
