“Businesses need to see themselves as co-dependent, rather than isolated
competitors” Founded in 1874 Editor, Fiona Garcia:

The GCA’s annual conference last month saw a real coming together of the garden retail industry. What stood out was the willingness of the retail businesses to share ideas, information and best practises. No one eyed each other with suspicion or withheld ‘trade secrets,’ terrified a competitor might steal them. They all loved the opportunity to support and encourage one another to make changes and grow. There was a great moment when Warren Haskins stood on stage with Martin Stewart and read a written exchange between their fathers about the fact that Haskins would be opening a garden centre on the doorstep of Stewarts’ business in Ferndown. Having received a letter from Warren’s father explaining why Haskins would be making the move, Martin’s father, David Stewart, replied amicably, welcoming the family business to the area and saying that he looked forward to working together.
David didn’t view his new neighbour as a threat – or certainly didn’t let on if he did – and, instead, looked at ways the two family businesses could work together to enhance the garden offer in the area. And, this working relationship has continued over the past 40-plus years since that exchange.
Sat on a table with the team from Barton Grange Garden Centre, which has taken home the GCA’s Destination Garden Centre title six years in a row, I observed them offering plenty of advice and help to Welsh-based Tong Garden Centre. They even invited Tong to visit and see how certain things they discussed were done. I have witnessed similar comradery amongst members of groups, like Mica and Home Hardware but, on the whole, it’s not something I think we do enough of as an industry. We are all in it toggether and wouldn’t it be nice to share ideas and learn from each other with a view to doing a little bit better?
One speaker, Lesley Rochat, summed it up when she said “Businesses need to see themselves as co-dependent, rather than isolated, independent competitors”
