With Exclusively reporting another successful year, boasting a host of innovative products on stands and high-calibre buyers in attendance, DIY Week brings you the latest trends from the shows and what you can expect to see in housewares over the next year.

Exclusively Electrical worked well this year, with representatives from the major high-street names, the grocery sector, and online, as well as strong independents, including Leekes, Lords at Home, Butlers Choice, Potters, Roys of Wroxham and Kitchen Kapers. The shows also invited a group of international buyers and heavyweight retailers from as far afield as Australia, Poland, Latvia, the Czech Republic and Hong Kong, as well as Scandinavia and Europe. This year’s shows also included a

new area utilising the Atrium Gallery above the Exclusively Electrical show floor, which was dedicated to a comprehensive trend display co-ordinated by trend forecasters Scarlet Opus. Sponsored by the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA), the team has worked with the shows for several years to help both suppliers and visitors be aware, and make the most of, consumer and design trends affecting the housewares sector. Their role also includes offering

packed, and well-attended, seminar programme, run in the shows’ new Tomorrow’s Kitchen feature. The seminars combined to give a detailed overview of what is to come for the kitchen of the future and allowed visitors the opportunity to view some of the latest kitchen technology including a Samsung fridge with interior cameras, a remote-controlled oven and the very latest induction hob. Finally, a new ‘press showcase’ was introduced this year aimed at attracting key consumer press and bloggers to review key product launches and ranges at the show. The initiative saw over 50 top consumer journalists attending, with more requesting a post-show brief on the showcased brands. Coverage from this new initiative has already appeared in Hello magazine, for new exhibitor Coravin, and in GQ for Welsh Slateware.

The trends

So, what does trend forecaster Scarlet Opus predict to be big for the coming year in the home and housewares sector? The first major trend identified as one to watch for the 2018 spring/ summer season is ‘Botanical Oasis’, which Scarlet Opus described as “a relaxed mood, created with stylish simplicity”. It added that all luxury items have natural origins and are refined rather than conspicuous: “With this trend, rusticity satisfies the desire for authenticity.” Looking at the show floor, Scarlet

Opus identified five exhibitors and their relevant products that fit this trend and that it predicts will be in fashion next year: Denby – Studio Craft range (pictured bottom of page) Amefa – Blush cutlery range (bellow right) CIE Europe – Eco Bamboo range LSA International – Gin Grand Serving Set (below), Utility cheese dome in green, Axis vase trio in green, Utility tapas set, Edge champagne saucers Fairmont & Main – Neil Jeffree designed range

Another trend to watch out for in Spring/Summer 2018 is ‘Urban Planet’, which Scarlet Opus says is “inspired and very much influenced by our fascination with space and the ever-increasing exploration of other planets and the desire to find new places for humans to live. The translation of this trend is however, not at all ‘science fiction’ or ‘spacey’ in look; it is very sophisticated, realistic, natural and oddly, down to earth.”

The design consultancy selected

products from 12 companies at the show that it predicts will be in vogue next year.
