COVID:19 TRENDS
10 WAYS COVID-19 HAS CHANGED THE DIY INDUSTRY FOREVER
The consequences of Covid-19 will impact on every individual across the globe. At present, the future for many looks uncertain, but there is some inevitability about the changes to how the DIY industry will conduct itself. Here are 10 likely consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic to the industry.
Growth of a cashless society Social distancing policy has dictated that cash has taken a backseat. From contactless payments raised to
online orders, Covid-19 has made bank notes physically redundant these past weeks. Although it’s questionable if we will see a time when cash is truly a thing of the past, it’s no doubt that Covid-19 has accelerated the departure to a cashless society. Some independents need to adapt, particularly those that have a minimum card spend, don’t take credit cards such as American Express, and have a poor ecommerce offering.

The irreversible force of online retailing Following on from the growth of a cashless society, the Covid- 19 pandemic has shone a light on online retailing. Those with a less than robust offering have been exposed, and fickle consumers have sought to go elsewhere; once again Amazon and the supermarkets have benefitted. With social distancing to at least some degree likely throughout 2020, and some consumers still
hesitant to visit
many stores, online retailing will only continue to thrive. Adapting to stay ahead is crucial.

Click and Collect and Home Delivery is King Social
distancing has meant
retailers now need to think about offering alternative shopping experiences. No longer will Click and Collect and delivery options be concentrated to the large national retailers. Small and medium sized retailers will need to adapt and cater for the burgeoning ‘click and collect’ market, to ensure their customers don’t venture to the usual multinational suspects.
Social distancing is here to stay With no vaccine on the horizon and the likelihood of a second wave of Covid-19 infection, social distancing will become the way of life for us all. Retailers must ensure social distancing policies for both staff and consumers. During these troubling times, making a shopping experience for the customer is essential to ensure repeat custom and positive online and social media reviews.
Supply chain diversification In January and early February, we saw a crisis for many that rely on Chinese companies as part of its supply chain. With as many as 81 per cent of companies globally
