“Providing customers with a ‘bricks and mortar’ shopping opportunity is still vitally important”
Founded in 1874
DIY remains the darling of the retail trade
As we are all only too aware, there has been a massive growth in online retail shopping over the last few years, so news that the recent Screwfix Live event attracted over 20,000 visitors is good news indeed. It seems that the option of actually getting hands-on with products and the chance of picking up a bargain there and then still has huge appeal to shoppers. The event also provided the perfect opportunity for members of the trade to meet and network, which all helped to make it a success. And this organised by a business which has been at the forefront of omnichannel shopping and enjoyed huge growth thanks to its online and smartphone app developments. We have a full report from Screwfix Live starting on page 10 of this issue, courtesy of Clive and Kerry Daley of the Daley Hub. Screwfix did originally major on supplying tradesmen with tools and products they needed and fast, but a large proportion of its recent growth has been thanks to DIY consumers buying into the ‘click and collect’ shopping experience on offer. This may be fine for those savvy shoppers who know exactly what they want, but it doesn’t allow customers to browse and get a feel for products prior to making a purchase and there’s little chance of them making impulse purchases with this setup. So while having a good online offer and ecommerce capability is crucial to the success of any retail business these days, providing customers with a ‘bricks and mortar’ shopping opportunity is still vitally important, particularly it would seem in our industry. In other news it’s good to hear that the DIY market is still growing, despite the economic uncertainty and perpetual parliamentary chaos we seem to be stuck with for a while longer yet. Whether it’s cyber or physical sales channels under scrutiny, the DIY market continues to outperform many other retail sectors, which is testament to its continued popularity with the general public, quality and variety of products being offered by suppliers and the dedication from retailers in making sure customers have the knowledge required to make informed purchasing decisions.
