P7 / NEWS EXTRA Kingfisher presents its new GoodHome brand and
plans for the future
“Kingfisher may just have a trick up its sleeve...”
Founded in 1874
Kingfisher CEO Veronique Laury has said, for some time now, that nothing in the DIY sector has changed in the past 20 years, so it’s nice to see her – well, Kingfisher really – putting its money where its mouth is with the launch of GoodHome. The new stores, which you can read more about in our News Extra in this issue, appear to
be challenging the new Ikea Planning studio format, with a touch of Argos’ new digitally-led stores thrown in to create a truly omni-channel shopping experience. Whatever your thoughts on the new-style DIY store, it is one of the first new and exciting
things to launch in the DIY retail sector for some time. Many thought Bunnings’ new warehouse format would shake up the home improvement
market when it landed on the UK shores but, in the flesh, some found it was simply like walking around a B&Q store in the 80s… And we all know Veronique’s thoughts on the stores were widely publicised. Having been hammered by critics over its Kingfisher One programme, which is still
wreaking havoc in some parts of the business, the global retail giant may just have a trick up its sleeve to deliver the DIY shopping experience of the future. The store looks like nothing the group has ever launched before and maybe, where DIY
Express (remember that) seems to have tried and failed, this could mark the start of a new chapter for the business – particularly as there are plans to roll the brand out internationally. And, it’s not just the multiples investing in slick new shopping environments to grow their business, as we also profile an independent tool retailer, Epic Tools, who has done just that, relocating to a new site this month and creating what owner Dale Mickleburgh describes as “tool heaven”. And Dale says it is only the beginning for his business, with more in the pipeline. Suffice to say, the discount chains may be powering ahead with ambitious expansion plans
– cue B&M’s promise to open another 50 outlets this financial year and Poundworld founder Chris Edwards aiming to roll out 100 of his new One Below outlets by the end of 2019 – but if you want to entice shoppers with more than just bargain prices, you need to step up your game and offer top service, true inspiration, and a comprehensive range on tap when the customer wants it.
