The latest headlines from across the home improvement and garden sectors

P10 / RETAILING REPORT Clive and Kerry Daley provide a summary and round

up of all of their instalments from this year

“The innovation and creativity we continue to enjoy in many

areas of the business is amazing and great see”

Founded in 1874

It’s certainly been a turbulent year for the DIY retail trade, with many outside influences and factors affecting sales. From unpredictable weather to increased online shopping habits all wrapped up in political uncertainty, there have been plenty of problems to face and overcome. Looking back over our news pages from the year, you get an idea of the issues the industry has faced and how it’s affected many of the biggest names in the trade, with profit warnings, closures and mergers seeming to dominate the headlines. You can see this for yourself in our 2019 news roundup on page 19 of this issue. But it hasn’t all been doom and gloom, there have also been plenty of good news stories, with some suppliers diversifying, embracing change and turning it to their advantage. I think it’s fair to say that the DIY trade has been behind the curve when it comes to collecting consumer data and using it better understand their customers and therefore provide them with a more tailored shopping experience. This is something I think we will see a lot more of in the near future as our industry takes the lead from others that are increasing sales by offering something different. There have been some great business ideas discussed by Clive and Kerry Daley from the Daley Hub throughout the year and you can read a summary of their articles starting on page 10 of this issue as they look back over the year. One of the main drivers of the DIY trade are new products and we’ve certainly seen plenty of them released this year. The innovation and creativity we continue to enjoy in many areas of the business is amazing and great see. It’s led to some very interesting new products being launched throughout 2019 and we have our traditional end of year roundup of the best of these starting on page 20. Hopefully we will see many of these entered in the 2020 DIY Week Awards, more details of which can be found on page 6. And find out who will be judging them on p14.

I hope you enjoy our look back over the last twelve months in this special issue and it just

remains for me to wish you a very merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
