“Make the most of the young minds you have in your
business now” Founded in 1874
The Hafod Hardware Christmas ad was a firm favourite in the office last year – and we weren’t surprised it bagged the DIY Week Award for best marketing initiative this year. But, what was really refreshing was, when speaking to Hafod’s Tom Jones for this issue, I get the impression it wasn’t just a fluke or one hit wonder. Hearing about his journey towards working in his grandparent’s hardware shop and what he has done for the business already, I was really impressed by his ideas and the exciting marketing strategy he has for the Welsh independent. And, that got me thinking about the value younger generations can bring to the businesses in our industry. Of course, there are some very successful examples of retailers who have worked their way up from the grass roots of the business as Saturday boys or girls, but there is also something to be said for letting younger family members spread their wings and go out and develop other skills – even if at first they are seemingly-unrelated to retail – so that, when they return, they have new ideas and energy to inject into your company. That’s not to say they won’t then need a guiding hand to get to know the intricacies of the industry or the finer points of how the business operates but they are likely to look at things a different way and maybe make you wonder why you’ve been doing something the same way for all these years. I remember a speaker at a conference talking about “reverse mentoring” and drawing on the knowledge of younger employees. He believes every head of a business “should have a person of 25 by their side helping them to steer the company,” to provide that combination of experience and “a young person who knows the world of today”. Just look at Matthew Bent of Bents Garden & Home, who was actively encouraged by his father Ron to go out, work abroad (in garden retailing I might add) and gain a wealth of wide-ranging experience to bring back into the family business. Now Bents MD, Matthew was responsible for the award-winning Open Skies development at the Warrington garden centre and has been instrumental in driving the business forward with new ideas and initiatives. I’m not talking about succession planning here, I’m talking about making the most of the young minds you have in your business now and drawing on their ideas to enhance your offer.
