Barnitts began trading over 100 years ago and managed to keep itself ahead of local competition. 2019 will see the company’s next phase, a simplified business model and a focus on efficiency. Kiran Grewal finds out more.

The company began in 1896, previously an existing agricultural ironmongers, until it was bought by George Barnitt. Paul Thompson, the current managing director of Barnitts said: “In 1913, my great, great Uncle and great Grandfather bought it from George Barnitt, and they just stuck an ‘S’ on the end!” Since then, it’s been in our family - I’m the third generation,” he says.
