COMMENT Everything’s under (pest) control Editor, Fiona Garcia: fgarcia@datateam.co.uk

First issue back from taking a year off to have my son and it was a bit of a baptism of fire, having set myself the task of writing a piece about changes in legislation affecting the rodenticide industry for our annual pest control feature.

“Fear not, you shouldn’t get caught in any traps!”

Whilst I am obviously playing catch up on the topic, having not seen the gradual drip-feed of developments over the past 12 months, I did find myself going rather cross-eyed reading through screeds and screeds of information, stats and reports, attempting to familiarise myself with the names of chemical active ingredients, what seemed like an endless procession of initials that abbreviated the names of governing bodies (not helped by the fact that I also wrote a story about the use of banned neonicotinoid pesticides in the same week) and trying to make sense of the new rulings. Thankfully, some very kind people in the pest control industry took pity on me and gave over some time to explain the changes to me and what impact they may and are already having on the market, so I am certainly more clued up about the topic than I was a fortnight ago. But it did leave me wondering how some busy retailers would get on top of the subject and make sure they were up to speed with their obligations. Hopefully our feature will help give a clear picture of the changes coming into effect and break down the topic into more digestible tidbits (possibly not the best turn of phrase when talking about rodent poison). Fortunately, the suppliers I spoke to also told me they are very much committed to keeping their retailer customers well informed and supported throughout this process, so fear not, you shouldn’t get caught in any traps (sorry!).
