BATHROOMS AND SHOWERS A

s low-maintenance, waterproof bathroom and wetroom solutions continue to prove popular among homeowners, bathroom wall

panelling is becoming an increasingly appealing alternative to traditional tiling among both installers and homeowners. For builders’ merchants, understanding the benefits and applications of these systems is key to meeting customer demand.

Joanne Mailen, product lead at Wetwall, says the company recently commissioned a survey which revealed growing interest in wall panels among installers and their customers. She says: “Our survey of 250 professional bathroom fitters revealed a significant shift: wall panels are no longer an alternative to traditional tiling but have become a go-to solution for installers, with 99% including them as part of their everyday toolkit.” Mailen says that interest from homeowners has surged in recent years, with 87% of installers reporting increased customer uptake of wall panels over the past one to two years, and very few reporting any decline. “As 58% of installers cite quicker installation and better all-round value as the main reasons for using panels, the category’s growing popularity can be attributed to its ability to help achieve faster bathroom transformations,” she explains.

Mailen believes that the growing transition to wall panels presents a valuable opportunity for merchants to meet increasing customer demand for waterproof, low-maintenance alternatives to traditional tiling.

Mailen says: “In many cases, bathroom wall panels can be installed directly over existing tiles, enhancing their appeal to customers looking to undertake a quick and easy refurbishment. “However, it is important to first ensure that the existing tiles are securely adhered to the wall and that there are no issues such as damp, mould or structural damage that could affect the installation. Any loose tiles should be removed and the surface filled and sanded smooth before fitting. “

She explains that thinner panels, such as those in Wetwall’s Alloy collection, feature a slim 4mm profile, making them ideal for installation over existing tiles as they add minimal bulk to the wall.

“By making customers aware of these considerations, merchants can help ensure

Bathroom wall panelling isn’t new, but it is increasingly in demand as an alternative to traditional tiling. BMJ looks at what merchants might need to know in order to make the most of sales.

expectations are met, leading to a smoother installation process and a high-quality finished result.”

As with any building product, quality matters. Premium wall panels typically offer greater durability, strength and resistance to damage, while lower-cost alternatives may show signs of wear sooner.

Resistant to moisture, impacts, scratches and everyday wear, they can maintain their appearance for years with minimal maintenance. The grout-free solution is quicker to install and easier to clean, significantly reducing the time and effort needed to maintain a pristine look. This eliminates common issues such as mould and cracking associated with grout. Mailen explains that Wetwall’s panel systems are designed to be 100% waterproof, protecting the underlying walls from moisture damage caused by splashes and condensation. The installation process appeals to those seeking a quick refresh of their space without the mess and downtime of traditional tiling. This makes wall panels an easy sell for merchants.

“ When it comes to the installation of bathroom wall panels, the process really couldn’t be simpler. No specialist tools or training are required to measure, cut and fit panels. For example, a good quality circular saw or jig saw can easily cut through the material,” she says. “However, precise measuring and careful cutting are essential to achieving a professional finish, particularly when working around fixtures such as pipes, windows, and fittings.” Wetwall panels are low-maintenance and easy to clean using a mild detergent and a soft cloth or sponge.

Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads that could damage the surface.

Mailen adds that regular cleaning with non- abrasive products will keep panels looking fresh and new for longer. Be sure to always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions to maintain the warranty.

“By sharing this guidance, merchants can help customers get the best long-term performance from their wall panels, supporting customer satisfaction and repeat business.” BMJ
