DIGITAL TAX DRIVES SOFTWARE MOVE MAM Trader’s

compatibility with the new tax regulations helped one timber merchant choose its new software

W

hewells (Hardboard) Ltd, a long-established family timber merchant, has chosen MAM Trader to help it meet its

obligations under Making Tax Digital. The company’s previous system did not provide this functionality, leaving owner Michael Whewell with the decision of whether to upgrade with his company’s existing provider or go in search of new business management software. Changes to the UK tax system came into force in April 2019 and require VAT-registered businesses with a turnover exceeding £85,000 to submit their returns electronically.

Whewell said: “Making Tax Digital forced the issue of finding a new software provider for us. Finding a compatible system was the most important criteria.”

There were other benefits within Trader that stood out for Whewells, including its user-friendly interface and the fact it appeared easy to learn. The company was keen to find a system that would help it better process sales transactions, as well as simplify day-to-day tasks for the accounting team.

MAM’s Trader business management software will help Whewells achieve these goals and more. The innovative ERP application is designed to help companies of all sizes improve their efficiency by providing staff access to information at point of sale, including stock details and accurate pricing. Whewells opted for the cloud version of the software after previously using a server-based system.

“We were nervous about moving to the cloud,” Whewell says. “However, the cost

advantages outweighed any worries we might have had, as did the knowledge that MAM would be in charge of updating and maintaining our software. The 3G/4G backup will also give us peace of mind if our line connection should ever drop.”

Trader is backed by a team of UK-based professionals seven days a week, so Whewells will be able to access the support and

technical advice they need to get the most out of their software.

He adds: “MAM has been highly

professional and courteous to work with; they’ve been keen to offer reassurance and

resolve any concerns we might have before the system is installed.

“Moving to a new system has been a big decision for us, but we are confident we have made the right one.”

Ben Whitehouse, senior sales manager at MAM Software, said: “Integrated accounting functionality is just one of the features that makes Trader so attractive to businesses. “Making Tax Digital is being rolled out gradually and will affect every business, so companies should consider whether their current system is compatible sooner rather than later.” BMJ
