The BMF is not aware of any clamour for a return to imperial weights and measurements by either member companies or their customers. The overall tone and direction of the proposals appear to be aimed at b2c consumer transactions. We also stressed that metric units must remain essential for international trade.

We urged ministers not to proceed with these proposals because it will impose undue and unwelcome specification, familiarisation and conformity costs on British businesses. BMF members should not be compelled to make goods in both imperial and metric units unless they choose to do so.

John Newcomb, BMF CEO said “I look forward to hearing from Howard and David as part of this years Industry Debate. With our conference theme of “Creating Connections” we will be exploring how our industry can thrive by working collaboratively.”

John added: “I’m delighted to announce that this year’s Conference is now fully- booked.”

The supply chain that the BMF represents faces severe financial and trading difficulties - notably higher raw material, energy, labour and transport costs and other inflationary pressures. At a time of financial hardship and economic uncertainty, ministers would face stiff questions on whether (or not) it represents value-for-money to proceed with these proposals.
