BMF opens new Regional Excellence Centres

THE BMF HAS opened two more Regional Centres of Excellence: at Xtratherm and at Superglass Insulation.

The network of BMF Regional Centres of Excellence is making training courses and regional meetings more accessible to BMF members.

The first centre is based in Xtratherm’s premises in Navan. Xtratherm is a leading European manufacturer of thermal insulation with two factories based in Ireland and the UK. With over 30 years’ experience, Xtratherm has led the way in developing innovative thermal solutions, through advancement in product performance and detailing, backed by a team that understands the technical issues and best on-site practices. Danny Kearney, Director of Xtratherm Technical Sales & Marketing said, “As part of our ongoing commitment we have developed the Xtratherm Innovation Centre to demonstrate best practice on site and to ‘Close the Gap’ between design and on-site performance. We are delighted

to be associated with the BMF and for the opportunity to share our knowledge and resources with BMF members.” The second centre is at the Superglass Futureworks Innovation Centre in Stirling. The 3,000 sq ft facility combines meeting space for up to 40 people with a comprehensive product demonstration area showcasing the latest products. Superglass Insulation produces thermal and acoustic glass mineral wool products and has invested £37m in a state of the art manufacturing facilities in Stirling, which will double output at their Stirling base.

Andy Murray, UK Sales Director at Superglass said, “We are thrilled to have the Superglass Innovation Centre designated as a BMF Centre of Excellence. Innovation is at the heart of our strategy, and we believe this is most successful when undertaken in a spirit of collaboration with our trade partners.” • For details of all the BMF Regional Centres of Excellence please visit www.bmf.org.uk/ membership.

Electrical safety: mandatory inspections

Merchant

THE GOVERNMENT WILL tighten up the law on electrical safety in private rented accommodation. The BMF has seen an exchange between the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Common’s HCLG Select Committee, on reforms applicable to landlords. In his letter, the Secretary of State, James Brokenshire MP, says he will introduce a new mandatory requirement to ensure that electrical safety installations in their properties are inspected every 5 years. This news comes after recommendations earlier this year from a government and industry experts working group and the Select Committee.

Supplier

There is a general feeling amongst MPs that laws are passed but not enforced and further action is required. They want existing rules and methodology replaced with a simplified set of quality standards to improve tenants’ safety.

MPs also want ministers to amend legislation on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The ask is to make it mandatory to have CO detectors in living accommodation containing any fuel-burning appliance.

Service

The law at present is confusing because landlords and gas suppliers are only legally obliged to fit alarms in rooms that contain appliances that burn solid fuels. There is no legal requirement to do so for gas or oil boilers.
