ECO-FRIENDLY

Sustainable living starts at home

As eco-conscious living moves from niche to norm, homewares brands are rethinking materials, design, and durability. From recycled plastics to plant- based non-stick coatings, Housewares Magazine explores how leading names are making sustainability stylish, functional, and retail-ready.

S

ustainability has moved from niche

to necessity in the homewares market, with brands across the sector investing in circular design, recycled materials and products that are built to last. For retailers, this shift represents both an opportunity and a responsibility: consumers want performance, style and value as well as eco- friendly credentials. Four leading names show how they are responding to this growing demand. At Zyliss, part of DK Household Brands, sustainability is woven into every stage of product development. The brand has committed to reducing its environmental footprint by incorporating up to 50% wheat straw, a renewable by- product of wheat processing, into utensils and gadgets. Packaging is  year guarantees offered across a wide range. For Head of Marketing Heidi Thomas, longevity is the best form of sustainability. Function remains the starting point: materials are chosen to minimise waste while delivering performance, such as silicone edges on the potato masher that scrape every last bit from the pot. The use of wheat straw gives products like utensils, peelers and choppers a subtle organic texture while reducing reliance on virgin plastic. Zyliss has also expanded its offering with cutting boards made  aluminium. Packaging swaps plastic for recyclable kraft paper and paper wires, aligning with wider waste reduction goals. New launches include the Zick-Zick 3 chopper, an Easy Spin Salad Spinner with wheat straw integrated into the lid, and a Utility Knife Collection using eco-conscious materials in the handles. Cookware made from recycled aluminium rounds out the range.

“Eco-conscious design is no longer a niche but a necessity,” says Ms Thomas. “At Zyliss, we’re proud to lead this shift, creating tools that offer lasting value while embracing sustainable practices.”

Bagging a Greener Future

Maria Spagnuolo, Senior Marketing Manager at OXO EMEA, says OXO’s sustainability ethos is rooted in longevity. Products are created from premium, durable materials that remove the need for constant replacement, with part of the range now shifting from standard plastic to Tritan Renew. The iconic Angled Measuring Jug, for instance, now contains up to 50% recycled material while maintaining the clarity and performance the brand is known for. For OXO, eco-friendly design must enhance great design rather than limit it. The brand’s Silicone Reusable Bags exemplify this, pairing
