“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
I
t’s a simple phrase, isn’t it? One we’ve probably all heard countless times before. But lately, I’ve found myself thinking about it more and more.
Because life, and business, can feel incredibly busy sometimes. We’re all juggling deadlines, deliveries, rising costs, staffing challenges, customers, emails, meetings… and somewhere in the middle of all that, it’s easy to forget that everyone around us is carrying something too. That retailer you speak to at a trade show. The supplier on the other end of the phone. The colleague who always seems cheerful. The customer having a difficult day. We rarely know what someone else is dealing with behind the scenes. And I think that’s why looking after one another matters so much. One of the things I genuinely love about the housewares industry is that, despite its size, it still feels incredibly human. Relationships matter here. Conversations matter. People remember kindness. They remember support. They remember the businesses and individuals who took a moment to ask, “How are you doing?” Sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that make the biggest
difference. 12 | Checking in on someone. Offering encouragement. Sharing advice.
Supporting a struggling colleague. Celebrating someone else’s success without comparison. Even simply taking the time to properly listen. None of those things cost anything. But they can mean everything to the person receiving them. And perhaps that’s especially important at the moment. The past few
years have tested people in different ways, professionally and personally. Yet time and again, this industry continues to show resilience, warmth and an ability to pull together when it matters most. Because while products, trends and technology will always evolve,
people remain at the heart of this industry. Behind every display, every order, every independent retailer and every successful brand are individuals doing their best each day. So maybe this month is simply a little reminder. To be patient. To check in. To say thank you. To support one another
where we can. And perhaps to remember that success in business doesn’t just come from what we achieve, it also comes from how we make people feel along the way. A little kindness really does go a long way.
