HVAC equipment hire powers ahead

Following a dip during the pandemic, UK demand for HVAC rental is surging. Marc White, director of Carrier Rental Systems, reports on the drivers powering growth

T

he equipment rental market is a dynamic and fast-moving segment of the HVAC and building services industry.

The reason for this is the sheer diversity of

applications we support, from outdoor facilities at international airshows to critical support for nuclear power stations, and the emergency nature of the service we provide to keep buildings and industry running when equipment breaks down. No two days are the same. In a typical week, we

respond to urgent calls from hospitals, schools, leisure centres, food production plants, steel mills, civic buildings, and hotels, to mention just a few. When heating and cooling equipment fails, it is almost always an emergency, as buildings quickly become unusable and industrial production grinds to a halt. Our mission is to respond as quickly as possible to restore vital services, so buildings and businesses

Why HVAC equipment rental can be an attractive option:

¡ Tax relief: Rental costs are normally 100% allowable against corporation tax, reducing overall costs. ¡ Immediacy: Capex approval can take time and delay itself can be costly. Rental provides an immediate solution. ¡ Fixed costs: Hiring provides cost certainty for accurate budgeting and cash flow. ¡ 24/7 call out: Equipment is maintained throughout the hire period, ensuring continuity and no unexpected costs. ¡ Flexibility: Capacity can be added with a phone call to meet unexpected demand. ¡ Research & development: A hire solution meets the need for short-term testing without a long-term commitment. ¡ New premises and short term leases: Renting is an attractive solution to cover immediate and short-term needs.

can continue to operate. This requirement for rapid response means that we are on permanent standby 24/7, 365-days of the year. No other service – except perhaps the fire brigade – requires such a constant state of readiness.

This is in addition to the more structured, planned maintenance side, where we support outages of fixed plant with hire equipment to enable seamless continuity while refurbishment or upgrading is carried out.

The key is to provide a total solution that solves the customer’s problem. This covers not just equipment such as cooling, heating, ventilation, steam and dehumidification, but system design, planning and logistics, and essential support such as fuel telemetry and power. As a result of this integrated approach, demand

for hire solutions has never been greater. Following a dip during the pandemic, the UK events sector in particular is resurgent, and our new offering of very low temperature chillers is in demand to support food production sites across the UK. COVID shone a light on the criticality of healthy

and safe indoor environments. The drive for healthy buildings is changing the approach to system design, with emphasis on good air quality, requiring larger,

more powerful ventilation and filtration solutions and equipment. To meet this need, we have invested in the latest high-efficiency air handling units. Our fleet of high- performance air scrubbers – which includes Carrier’s OptiClean Dual-Mode Air Scrubber and Negative Air Machine – is also in demand. In addition to one-off projects, we are increasingly supporting facilities management (FM) customers with a one-stop service for national estates. The ability for FM operators to solve a problem anywhere in the
