performance curves to actual load requirements, drastically improving part load efficiency. The plenum chamber distributed airflow evenly, increasing efficiency and reducing operational noise, while fan arrays were anchored to existing locations to avoid any masonry work or alterations to the listed fabric.
Custom fan array retrofit
Configuration: Removed 28 legacy fans; installed 14 supply, and 14 extract units containing a mixture of 1×1, 2×1 and 4×2 fan array module configuration, the largest acting as the central air distribution in the plenum chamber in the basement. Efficiency gains: Optimised duty curves via in house fan selection software, matching duty points to actual building loads. Noise & emissions reduction: Even airflow distribution in plenum chamber increased efficiency and lowered sound levels. Heritage protection: Fan arrays installed into to existing areas, no masonry or building work was required. The physical install was undertaken by Axair’s
a custom fan-array solution consisting of a mix of single module, dual module, and an eight fan module fan unit installed within a sealed plenum chamber in the basement plant room. This configuration allowed for precise matching of fan
installation partner, was completed over a few weeks with a scheduled plan to ensure ventilation was only turned off on areas that were being installed, all other ventilation units remained working. Sensitivity and pressure were applied from the client when retrofitting the ventilation unit that fulfilled the area that held archived material
RETROFIT IN HVAC
“The core challenge lay in balancing heritage preservation, rapid ROI, and improved building performance.”
that needed preserving, and therefore this needed a fast and efficient retrofit to reduce downtime. Technicians safely decommissioned and removed the legacy belt driven units and prepared the basement plenum. Later integration of Modbus- based controls into the client’s existing BMS took place by the Modbus engineer. Following integration delays due to unfamiliarity with the product by their party engineer, Axair’s technical team collaborated directly with component manufacturers on- site to finalise register mapping and conduct comprehensive functional testing, ensuring seamless commissioning without impacting event schedules.
