ELCO boosts efficiency at historic York boarding school
A
TRIGON® L PLUS 120kW gas boiler from ELCO has been installed in the drama block of St Peter’s School in York. Founded in 627AD, the school is now benefitting from a significant increase in energy efficiency and a 46% reduction in running costs. Gary Sharp, director at installers S&B Heating Ltd, said: “We chose the TRIGON® L PLUS because it is a floor standing unit, which suited the cellar location and enabled us to use the existing flue stack, while the addition of the system components within the backpack cut down on space required and installation time. The fact the TRIGON® L PLUS comes with two independent stainless steel heat exchangers built-in meant we could fit the same redundancy in a smaller footprint.” Since the project’s completion, the school’s gas meter readings have revealed energy savings of over 46% during the winter months compared to the previous year, as well as an improvement in efficiency from 70% to 98.2%. This is in addition to the school’s staff and students benefitting from a reliable source of heating all year round. Available in seven different models with outputs from 60-200kW, the TRIGON® L PLUS range benefits from ultra-low NOx emissions, superb seasonal efficiencies and flexible cascade arrangements. It is also compact and lightweight thanks to its low water content.

Hamworthy Heating helps charity target operational costs and carbon footprint
W
hen Hull and East Yorkshire Centre for the Deaf needed a modern heating system to replace its existing boiler which was experiencing faults, Hamworthy Heating stepped in to provide the charity with the Stratton mk3 wall-hung condensing boiler, free of charge, to help the charity to achieve maximum savings.
To evaluate the heating requirements of Hull & East Yorkshire Centre for the Deaf, a site visit was commissioned free of charge by Tucker Mechanical and Electrical Building Services. With cost being a major consideration for the charity, Tucker Mechanical and Electrical Building Services decided that the Stratton mk3 wall-hung condensing boiler system with stainless steel heat exchanger would be the best way forward in helping the charity reduce its carbon footprint and lower operational costs. The selected model delivers an output of 70kW, a gross seasonal efficiency of 95.5% and features an integral sequence controller, 5:1 turndown and quiet operation. Accessories include two frame and header kits to increase the overall output of the boiler system up to 140kW, a plate heat exchanger, pressurisation unit and an expansion vessel.
Following the upgrade the centre now benefits from a system which has enabled the charity to reduce its carbon footprint, lower fuel bills and achieve future maintenance and servicing savings.

Space -saving TF1 Sigma UB filter - fits horizontally under the boiler
U
nlike most system filters, the TF1 Sigma UB filter can be installed horizontally at a 90° angle, directly under the boiler, close to the wall and with direct connections to the system. It is an easy to install option even in the most restricted of spaces and has been developed for use with concealed pipework. Through its design, the filter captures the
maximum amount of circulating debris possible. System water passes through the manifold into the filter’s main body, where the magnetic debris is transferred directly to the powerful, neodymium magnet. This protects the boiler, optimises boiler efficiency and prevents system breakdown.
Mark Hall, head of mechanical engineering, at Fernox said: “The TF1 Sigma UB Filter provides an effective solution for new builds or properties where boilers are housed behind cupboards and close to kitchen counter tops, meaning installation of an in-line filter was not practical or convenient.”
The filter has been manufactured from a high strength, composite polymer and forged brass manifold, which allows for direct and secure connections to the system. Available with a 10-year warranty, it has been precision engineered for universal usage - however for specific boiler models an adapter is supplied.

Steep learning curve for Lochinvar heat pumps
E
ight heat pumps provided by Lochinvar are helping a Further Education college achieve its sustainability and low carbon
goals. Backed by funding from the government’s
low carbon Salix finance initiative, South Devon College in Paignton was able to upgrade its heating and hot water system and incorporate eight Lochinvar heat pumps providing 1.6 megawatts (MW) of heating for the site. This involved making significant changes to the existing heating system supplying the campus so it would work with renewable technologies. Lochinvar worked closely with the contractor Mitie Facilities Management of Cardiff and provided extensive advice to help them design and specify the most appropriate system.
To meet the significant heating and hot water requirements of the college, Mitie specified eight air-to-water high temperature Amicus heat pumps supplying two 2,000 litre LBT thermal stores also supplied by Lochinvar. The location of the campus on a very steep hill restricted the space available for such a large heat pump installation and a considerable amount of “creative thinking” was.
The heat pumps are installed in a compound adjacent to the building they supply, and the system is split in half with four units serving one side of the building and four serving the other. Domestic hot water is supplied to three existing cylinders via a plate heat exchanger.
