HEAT NETWORKS
“ The industry has to – and in many areas is – stepping up to the plate to restrict and remove poor performing HIUs.”
I’ve spoken about this scheme before, but HNTAS aims to ensure heat networks are built correctly at the outset – meaning the desired efficiency and performance will be met. This is thanks to a verification process it will deliver. The key change that HNTAS will bring for HIU is
they will be linked to BESA 2023 and later versions, further simplifying the verification process. There will be a need for a reference number and QR code on all HIU, meaning any installer or specifier can check how they have been tested and the results before they opt for a model. This can be done easily on-site, meaning specifiers can have peace of mind that compliant HIUs have been installed that will provide the efficiency and comfort that they desire. It will also restrict the inclusion of older HIUs that don’t adhere to the BESA 2023 Test Regime – which will greatly help heat networks to perform more consistently, keeping energy costs down for consumers at a time when the cost of living is affecting all.
HNTAS is set to be introduced later this year, and I truly believe it represents a big step in heat networks development.
Message from MEHNA
One other exciting development for HIUs in 2026 is a new guide that, by the time this article is published, should be public. It is a new guide from MEHNA – Heat Network Installer Training – Installation, Commission and Maintenance of Heat Interface Units authored by the trade association as a practical document that can be used by installer on site. With so much change currently being faced by the
industry, it was recognised that a thorough guide on HIU installations to provide installers with practical steps on how to both install and commission HIUs correctly, and in line with standards such as HNTAS, was needed. This will further simplify HIU installs, both
educate and entice installers on the technology and ultimately, improve the essential efficiency specifiers and developers need from their heat networks. There is a lot of movement in the right direction
for HIUs and heat networks coming in next year, and my hope is that 2026 will be the year that performance will be genuinely improved. But we need the whole industry – from manufacturers to commercial property developers – to get on board.
