Solution tackles IAQ and mould for

social housing resident

Airtech, a condensation and mould specialist, has helped a Mid-Devon social housing resident to improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) and combat mould in their home.

M

id-Devon District Council had a resident with persistent mould so asked for Airtech’s help to find a solution. In response, Airtech

supplied and installed its Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) and bathroom extractor fan solutions in the property to improve the IAQ and tackle the condensation and mould. Mid-Devon District Council also managed to

install some environmental monitoring into the resident’s home, just before the PIV and new bathroom extract fan were installed, to assess the IAQ before and after the ventilation installation. Since the property had a cooler wall backing a communal hallway it was beneficial to have an idea of environmental monitoring levels before each intervention so that it was clear how much of an impact ventilation was having on the mould The environmental monitoring conducted before the installation set a baseline that clearly showed an immediate improvement in CO2 levels following the installation of the PIV and bathroom extractor fans. Such an immediate improvement in CO2 and associated ventilation and health benefits was great news for the resident and highlighted the effectiveness of the approach. “We managed to fit some environmental monitoring devices into the resident’s home just before a PIV and new bathroom extract fan was installed. It was great to see such an immediate improvement in CO2 and associated ventilation and health benefits this brings,” said Rosie Wills, technical support & repairs manager Mid Devon Housing, Mid Devon District Council. “The majority of our PIV installs relate to homes with longstanding mould issues, and where advice, repairs and

was present in your home before the PIV was installed? On a scale of 0 – 10, where 0 is no mould and 10 is severe mould in all rooms, how much black mould was present in your home since the PIV was installed?

Responses included:

improvements have seen little to no success. The feedback to date following these installs has been really encouraging.” A year after installation, allowing a full winter period between install, Mid Devon Housing residents are surveyed on how the PIV has affected the mould in the property. This questionnaire asks tenants to score the severity and spread of mould out of 10, before and after the PIV install. It also asks whether there has been any noticeable improvement and whether they would recommend the system and/or the company. There was an 85% positive response rate, with 55% of respondents stating that they had no more issues with mould.

Respondents were asked the following questions:

On a scale of 0 – 10, where 0 is no mould and 10 is severe mould in all rooms, how much black mould

PIV installation 1/10. “Condensation was dripping off the ceiling, and black mould, especially in bedroom. Has not returned. Some mould in the bathroom in tiles and grout, but may just be staining. The system definitely has worked.” Mould before PIV installation: 7/10. Mould since

PIV installation to 0/10. “Would recommend - there has been an improvement in partner’s breathing, better health overall. This should be fitted wherever there is asthma.” Mould before PIV Installation: 10/10. Mould

since PIV Installation: 2/10: “Partially resolved and there has been noticeable improvement. Would recommend a lot better for my health.” The products have been crafted to solve problems

whilst reducing both operational costs and environmental impact. From the intelligent extractor fan ranges that boast logging capabilities to more robust ventilation options like the PIV and whole- house ventilation systems that supply and extract air continuously at a low energy rate, there is an innovative solution to improve IAQ.
