Time for change

A

s 2019 comes to an end, we must reflect on what a significant year it has been and its implications for the heating

industry moving forwards.

While the political debate has been consumed with Brexit, it’s most likely the D word

(decarbonisation) that will dominate the year to come particularly for those involved in the heating sector.

With the climate crisis message hitting home, the government this year announced its net- zero carbon emissions target by 2050 which means time is limited for our industry to find sustainable solutions to provide heat in the future while also safeguarding the planet. Just this month, two industry bodies which play a key role for the HVAC sector, BSRIA and BESA, held importantmembership events in which Climate Change was central to the agenda. We have more reports from the conference on page 12.

Also in the issue is a four-page review of events as they transpired at the 10th

anniversary of the HVR Awards held at London’s picturesque Tower Hotel.

The review includes all the details and pictures of the winners and finalists and crucially what the judges had to say about the winning entries.

Other features this month include, chimneys & flues, air conditioning, fans and renewables.

Cutting edge heat & v

lamco has made strides in sustainability with a new range of expansion vessels now available in the UK.

The Flexcon Premium range benefits from a new plastic membrane, and offers raw materials and energy savings, whilst offering a 15-year guarantee. That’s more than double the previous guarantee, when compared to the existing expansion vessels available.

Significantly Flamco’s new plastic membrane for expansion vessels of two to 80 litresmakes

expansion vesselsmuchmore sustainable, in terms of environmental performance and durability. The manufacturer had an independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) carried out to determine and limit the environmental impact of its expansion vessels. With a globalmarket in this product segment, every environmental saving achieved yields a large-scale result. The LCA showed that despite the already good

environmental scores, significant environmental gains and extra life span were possible. After intense research, Flamco decided to replace the rubbermembrane with a plastic membrane made of thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO). The environmental performance appeared to be better than that of the existing membrane and TPO can be burned or recycled more

efficiently into other products of the same quality than is the case for rubber.

The new membrane is also said to be much lighter. This saves raw materials, energy and fuel

for transport and results in a large reduction of CO2 emissions. On one transport container of Flexcon

Premium 25 litre expansion vessels, there is a weight saving of 997kg .

The life span of the new expansion vessels is much longer than that of the existing expansion vesselmodels due to the newmembrane and also offers a saving on maintenance. Flamco translates this advantage to the end user by now offering a full 15-year warranty on the entire expansion vessel.

KEEPING IT F ING IT CLEAN T CLEAN

lamco has also introduced two other new products. The

SideFlow Clean is an all-in-one side stream filter that keeps central heating and cooling installations clean and efficient. The SideFlow Clean combines magnetic and bag filtration to effectively trap

magnetite and dirt and is suitable for use in installations in the commercial, industrial and utilities sectors.

Meanwhile Flamco’s XStream is a new approach to air and dirt separation. The ECO/MAX mode setting on the XStream is said to make it easy to install, prolongs the life of a heating system by reducing wear and tear; has minimal heat loss due to its

integrated insulation and reduces energy consumption by 15% improved system performance.
