HEATRAE SADIA APPLAUDS ‘PV FOR FREE’ SCHEME

H

eatrae Sadia has expressed support for a wave of local schemes enabling more consumers to benefi t from solar PV panels. One of the most recent of these initiatives has been launched on the brand’s doorstop, by Norwich City Council. The ‘PV for Free’ scheme will see more than a thousand council houses in the area fi tted with the panels free of charge, allowing tenants to use the energy generated in their homes, with any excess energy put into a feed-in- tariff for the company that installs them. Elsewhere this summer, the Solar Together scheme was launched by a collective of Suff olk councils as a group buying scheme designed to encourage the uptake of solar panels. Test schemes such as this have already been piloted with great success, resulting in a combined 50,000 solar PV installations, the equivalent of 175MW of power. Initiatives such as these are encouraging news for the

renewables market, which has recently seen the launch of a consultation on the closure of the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT). Despite fears surrounding the original cuts to FIT payments and the new consultation, ONS fi gures show that the number of panels is still on the rise, with 924,130 homes in the UK having them installed. Alan Clarke, technical support manager at Heatrae Sadia, said: “In the face of potentially damaging

governmental changes to the FIT scheme, it is extremely encouraging to see local bodies supporting the use of solar power. It is vital that we support the domestic renewables market, and whilst there may have been challenges over the last couple of years, demand for solutions such as solar PV are still steadily rising. At Heatrae Sadia, we believe that off ering new and innovative ways of harnessing renewable power should be a high priority, which is why we have pioneered products such as the Megafl o Eco Solar PV Ready. “We commend Norwich City Council and every other

local authority which is doing its part to support the uptake of solar PV, and anticipate the introduction of more and more of these schemes in the future.”

LONDON MAYOR BRINGS IN COMMERCIAL BOILER SCRAPPAGE SCHEME

T

he Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched the fi rst commercial boiler scrappage scheme of its kind in the UK to help London’s small and medium-

sized enterprises save money on their energy bills and improve air quality in the capital.

Under the £10m Cleaner Heat Cashback scheme, SMEs in London will be able to receive a contribution of 30% towards the cost of installing a new high-effi ciency, low- NOx gas or LPG boiler. This fi gure will increase to 35% in Air Quality Focus Areas. Where new boilers are used in a hybrid system, the contribution also increases to 35% (uplifting to 40% in AQFAs). The scheme, which will be administered by the Energy

Savings Trust, started on July 30 2018 and will run until March 31 2020, or until funds last. It applies to existing coal or biomass boilers of any age, and gas or LPG boilers at a minimum of 10 years old, with a minimum total output of 70kW. The replacement boilers must be at least 90% effi cient and have NOx emissions of 40mg/kWh or less. Chris Meir, sales director at Remeha, said: “We applaud this positive initiative by the Mayor of London’s offi ce to incentivise the replacement of ineffi cient boilers with cleaner, lower carbon, ultra-low NOx condensing boilers. “As a leading boiler manufacturer and supplier – and a

pioneer of condensing boiler technology – we look forward to working with contractors and installers to support delivery of this scheme in London. “Far too many UK non-domestic buildings rely on

dated, ineffi cient boiler plant, wasting energy, creating unnecessarily large heating bills and polluting the air with needlessly high greenhouse gas emissions.” Potterton Commercial has also welcomed the boiler

scrappage scheme. Steven Evans, sales director at Potterton Commercial, said: “Potterton Commercial has a range of boilers to support the scheme, with our forthcoming Sirius 3 line off ering one of the lowest NOx ratings on the market. All our models are ErP compliant, highly effi cient and off er a maximum modulation ratio of 9:1. With outputs of up to 250kW and cascade options, there’s an effi cient boiler for every type of building and usage. “

Ideal Commercial Boilers is similarly supportive. National sales manager Andy Forrest stated: “The initiative is a great incentive for businesses to reassess their current carbon footprint. “On our part, we will be assisting the process by off ering

free commissioning on the majority of our condensing commercial boiler range.”
