3-in-1 water protection


In specifying a water conditioning unit to provide ‘best protection and hydraulic efficiency’ for a boiler installation in a London parish church, installers Elemental Heating chose Spirotech’s 3-in-1 SpiroCross

he team spent around 10 days on site at the 19th-century St Mary’s Church in Hampton fitting new


boilers to provide 120kW of heat to two zones in the building. The church, close to Hampton Court


Palace, had relied on two large but failing standard efficiency cast iron boilers.


Elemental Heating director Patrick Wheeler explains: “The boilers were increasingly problematic with spilling flues and the church made the decision that replacing them would be better than continually repairing them. “We replaced the old floor-standing


iron boilers with three Intergas SB condensing boilers on a sequencing lead/lag controller. “The reason we specified a SpiroCross AX150 in this case was to separate the boilers from the system to allow constant flow on both sides at different differential temperatures and maximise boiler efficiency while maintaining the convector output.” The SpiroCross delivers hydraulic balancing coupled with active deaeration and dirt separation, ensuring even the tiniest air bubbles and smallest particles of dirt are removed. As a three-in-one component, with


four connections instead of eight, it saves installation time and cost and its compact design gives it a limited built-in height.

a lot, we fit deaerators domestically quite often because they decrease oxygen, which breeds dirt in a system over time, so that the corrosion factor is reduced. The SpiroCross unit, as it is a low loss header as well, is a winner all round.


“Magnetite affecting the water quality is by far the biggest problem, so using a SpiroCross following a powerflush and water quality testing ensured that we could get the best protection and system efficiency. “The whole system has since been insulated and has been running well through the winter months. We would ordinarily install a filter and a deaerator on any appliance but as we needed to hydraulically separate the system and the boiler cascade, the SpiroCross AX was a perfect solution. The AX unit is performing to its full potential. “This was not our first time fitting the


SpiroCross unit. We also have a smaller SpiroCross working in a domestic property in Chiswick on a single boiler with five zones. In that case the hydraulic separation was also to maintain flow through the boiler and the dew point essential for condensing.”

Abbots Heating, based in Abbots Langley, near Watford,


specified the SpiroCross for St Michael’s Catholic High School in nearby Garston. The company installed the AX 150 into the school’s 100kW cascade format heating system and an AX 125 for the 49kW single system serving its administration block.


Abbots Heating also chose an AX 125 for Grim’s Dyke Golf Club, at Hatch End, Middlesex. Paul Jeeves, director of Abbots Heating, who this year celebrates 30 years in heating engineering, said: “We have used SpiroCross on systems between 45kw and up to 160kw, using Viessmann boilers, for the past three years. “We have found the SpiroCross to have a low resistance to flow and, with the added benefits of


debris collection and air separation, found it to protect the systems very well. “When compared to the alternative of building your own low loss header - with the added cost of strainers and labour on top of basic materials then lagging it – the SpiroCross is very cost effective, especially with the pre-formed insulation jacket. “It is extremely compact, which is an advantage when space is at a premium.” Spirotech specification manager Keith Mileham, says: “The SpiroCross was developed using computational fluid

separate components, it has a 20-year warranty. “Like all Spirotech products, it is designed to help the heating, or cooling, system work to its most efficient while also protecting against corrosion. “While the Spirotube in the


SpiroCross can trap the smallest micro bubbles and dirt particles, its open structure means it will not clog up, while the flow and the low pressure drop are unaffected by the accumulated dirt. “The trapped dirt can be


discharged while the system is in operation. This saves a great deal of time and represents a major advantage over filters.”
