GREEN MATTERS

and cooling. They are a safe and reliable solution, yet it is frequently reported that the UK’s uptake of heat pumps has been very slow. The government has set a target of installing 600,000 heat pumps per year by 2028, but in 2023, only around 65,000 heat pumps were fi tted. Perhaps this is not surprising considering roughly half of Brits have never even heard of a heat pump. Clearly, more needs to be done to educate consumers on the benefi ts of heat pumps if the UK is to meet its target.

In addition to education, training will be another key component to encouraging widespread heat pump adoption. Recent reports show that only a third (30%) of builders feel comfortable advising on the installation of heat pumps if asked by a customer. The good news is that steps are being taken to ensure the industry is better informed. For example, it was recently announced that German engineering company, Bosch Home Comfort, will be incorporating Honeywell’s low-GWP Solstice 454B refrigerant in its newest line of heat pumps. As part of this collaboration, Bosch technicians in the US will be trained in the safe maintenance and installation of these next- generation low-GWP solutions.

Heat pumps utilising HFOs need to be prioritised as the world shifts to low-carbon technologies. With the ability to warm and cool homes, they are a practical two-for-one

solution that off ers increased energy effi ciency and reduced costs for homeowners. If countries are serious about meeting their decarbonisation goals, an emphasis needs to be placed on educating and incentivising homeowners to transition away from traditional cooling methods. Safe and eff ective solutions are available now to help keep homeowners cool as the country navigates rising temperatures.
