Better converting starts with better process understanding

he demands placed on today’s converters continue to grow. Shorter product lifecycles, increasing material diversity and rising expectations for customised solutions require production processes that are both highly fl exible and consistently reliable. Whether processing pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, technical textiles, fi lms, foams, composites or other non-metallic materials, successful converting depends on far more than accurate cutting alone. Every application presents its own technical and production challenges. Material construction, adhesive behaviour, dimensional tolerances, throughput targets and downstream assembly all infl uence the most appropriate manufacturing process. The real challenge is therefore not selecting a cutting technology, but developing a process that delivers consistent quality, high productivity and long- term process stability.

T

For many applications, that process begins long before the fi rst cut.

Understanding the material, the product and the complete production workfl ow is essential. Is the material supplied from roll or sheet? Will the product move from prototype to volume production? Does the application require printed contour recognition, automation or additional fi nishing operations? Answering these questions at an early stage lays the foundation for an effi cient and scalable manufacturing process.

CO2 laser cutting has become an established technology for converting non-metallic materials because it combines exceptional precision with outstanding fl exibility. As a contact-free process, it

eliminates tool wear, mechanical stress and material distortion while producing intricate geometries without the limitations of conventional tooling. Design modifi cations can be implemented directly from digital data, eliminating tooling costs and enabling rapid product changes without interrupting production.

The process also off ers important material-specifi c advantages. Synthetic textiles benefi t from sealed edges that prevent fraying, multilayer fi lms can often be processed without mechanical stress, while acrylic can achieve smooth, fl ame-polished cut edges that frequently eliminate secondary fi nishing. These characteristics make laser processing particularly attractive for converters handling frequent product

changes, customised components and short production runs.

Technology alone, however, is only one part of a successful converting process.

At eurolaser, every project begins with the application rather than the machine. Material characteristics, production objectives and future requirements are assessed before defi ning the optimum system confi guration and processing parameters. Material testing, application consulting and process optimisation help establish stable, repeatable production processes before full-scale manufacturing begins, reducing development time while improving production reliability. The same philosophy extends throughout the lifetime of the system. Thanks to its modular machine concept, eurolaser enables customers to expand existing installations as production requirements evolve. Higher laser power, conveyor systems for roll-fed materials, camera recognition, automation modules and additional routing or knife tools can all be integrated without replacing the original machine. This allows manufacturers to broaden their processing capabilities while protecting existing investments.

Long-term productivity also depends on continuous support after installation. Operator training, software updates, application optimisation and preventive maintenance help ensure consistently high performance throughout the machine’s service life. Rapid technical support, fast spare parts availability and worldwide service minimise downtime, while extended warranty options and tailored service agreements provide additional operational and fi nancial confi dence.

In today’s converting industry, competitive advantage is increasingly determined by the ability to adapt. Manufacturers require production systems that evolve alongside changing materials, applications and market demands rather than becoming obsolete as technology advances. By combining modular laser technology with application expertise and comprehensive lifecycle support, eurolaser helps converters build fl exible, reliable production processes that continue to deliver value well into the future.

Visitors interested in learning more about modular laser processing solutions for converting applications can meet eurolaser at The Sign Show, taking place from 29 September to 1 October 2026 at the NEC Birmingham, and at Advanced Engineering, held on 4 and 5 November 2026, also at the NEC Birmingham.
