IST Metz receives the Red Dot for good design


In the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2019, UV specialist and system manufacturer IST Metz has won the Red Dot in the category “Packaging Design” with its “X-Press-U” packaging concept, which combines printing technology and culinary delights. IST Metz succeeded in winning over the international jury with its


project in the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2019. Based on the high design quality and creative accomplishment of the “X-Press-U” concept, the jurors awarded the sought-after Red Dot. Over several days, the experts had scrutinised, discussed and assessed a total of 8.697 international entries to the competition to ultimately select the best for an award. The “X-Press-U” concept by UV systems manufacturer IST Metz takes


UV printing and finishing techniques and combines them with culinary delights. The concept features a selection of coffee capsules paired with matching pralines, the creation of individual personas, and a printed paper sleeve with a highly sophisticated finish. As a visual representation of the symbiotic relationship between coffee and praline, the personas offer high recognition potential.


As anti-plastic sentiment builds across Europe, Ilapak, the leading manufacturer of packaging machines for flexible film applications has developed a breakthrough flow wrapping solution for producing plastic-free fresh fruit and veg packs. Key to this breakthrough is a special coating, enabling reliable and glitch-free running of compostable and paper films. “Consumers are increasingly eschewing plastic packaging, but from a


producer perspective, finding an alternative that is cost effective and matches the performance of plastic films is not an easy challenge. In-depth machinery trials also have to be carried out on any new materials to ensure they can be run on equipment. Recognising that consumer resistance to plastic is a growing trend our customers need to respond to, we have invested heavily in R&D in this area. This has yielded a module that allows fresh fruit and veg to be wrapped in compostable or paper films with supporting cardboard trays - satisfying both retailer and consumer calls for biodegradable packaging,” said Christian Romualdi, marketing communications manager at ILAPAK. Based on ILAPAK’s new Carrera 1500 flow wrapping platform, the new


system features a special folding box that enables the flow wrapper to handle paper films and compostable films.


Metsä Board implements artificial intelligence in quality management


Metsä Board’s Kyro mill is to begin using artificial intelligence for quality management on its folding boxboard machine. Supplied by Voith, the software uses measurement results related to the quality properties of and the mill’s process data. By combining various process parameters and using statistical models the system can automatically predict quality values and adjust process parameters in real time. This improves the production efficiency of the folding boxboard machine and improves quality consistency. “Artificial intelligence will contribute to high efficiency and accuracy of production


process control. Production waste will decrease, product quality consistency will further improve and grade changes will be quicker,” said Ari Kiviranta, SVP development at Metsä Board. “The operators at the mill can now focus on comprehensive management and operational development.” Metsä Board is also investigating different possibilities to take artificial intelligence into use at other Metsä Board mills.
