world through more sustainable packaging. Taking a pro-active approach to sustainable development is key to helping customers meet their own sustainability targets and vital for addressing the environmental challenges facing the planet. “Packaging decisions are not always
obvious, given the complexity of supply chains and the many possible ways to interpret sustainability,” says Mondi CEO Peter Oswald. “Not only does Mondi create packaging that is fit for purpose, either paper or plastic based, but we also can help guide the customer to choose the most sustainable packaging solutions for their product and value chain.” The belief that packaging should be sustainable by design provides Mondi with a real opportunity to innovate with its partners.
Lube Cube saves more than 500 tonnes of plastic
FUCHS Lubricants Lube Cube gives customers the option of buying its leading products in a recyclable cardboard box rather than a plastic container. Today, business leaders revealed the change had resulted in
A
an incredible saving of more than 500 metric tonnes (500,000kg) of plastic since the 20 litre Lube Cube’s launch in 2012. That is the equivalent of 10 million two litre plastic bottles, or 60 million plastic carrier bags. Rosemary Mellor, automotive product manager UK at Stoke-on-Trent-based FUCHS Lubricants, says:
“We are extremely proud to be leading the way in the lubricants industry when it comes to sustainable packaging. Our Lube Cube is a piece of genuine innovation and it has revolutionised how we sell many of our most popular oils in the automotive, industrial and agricultural sectors. To have saved such a huge amount of plastic is a fantastic achievement. We have effectively saved the equivalent energy usage of 500 households for one year.” The Lube Cube is a single use, 100 per cent recyclable packaging system. With zero disposal costs as
they can be included with normal recycling waste, significant savings are to be made when businesses are paying to dispose of hazardous waste. It is constructed from a strong, durable cardboard outer containing a product filled plastic inner. Lube Cubes are available in 4L, 5L and 20L capacities, depending on product. As well as the clear environmental benefits, Lube Cubes are easier to dispense from than traditional plastic bottles thanks to a built-in tap, similar to a wine box. They are also easier to store as they can be stacked on top of each other. The cardboard outer can be
flattened by hand and left for kerbside collection for recycling. Rosemary adds: “Environmentally sustainable products and packaging are a huge focus for FUCHS and this innovation is key to the future of our industry. FUCHS is committed to ensuring its products and packaging offer the same great performance whilst reducing environmental impact.” FUCHS has taken a number of steps to reduce its impact on the planet, including the installation of
more than 2,000 solar panels at its Potteries HQ.

EcoSolutions is Mondi’s customer-centric approach, collaborating with clients to deliver on their sustainability goals and commitments. Both paper and plastic have specific properties that make them fit for different purposes. Optimising the material used for packaging is part of Mondi’s framework, paper where possible, plastic when useful.
“Packaging is part of the solution.
Designed well, it protects and prolongs the life of products, especially food, helping to make goods more accessible to people worldwide. Our in-depth understanding of raw materials, converting processes, product design, local supply chain and recycling capabilities is ideal to guide the customer in making the right holistic packaging choice for both the planet and for the customer’s requirements during every step of the product’s life cycle,” notes Mondi CEO Peter Oswald. Mondi’s approach empowers their
partners to meet their commitments through three actions: replace, reduce and recycle. Replace less sustainable products and
materials with solutions that help customers fulfil their commitments, as with PerFORMing, a new tray made of Mondi’s Advantage Formable brown paper with a respective barrier that replaces plastic, now in the market with leading European retailer REWE. MailerBag, an e-commerce paper bag made of sack kraft paper that replaces the plastic mailers. Advantage Smooth White Strong offering high-class printability, fulfilling excellent form-fill-seal converting properties and providing good strength features for a new type of shelf-ready paper pasta bags. Reduce the volume of raw materials
used, and reduce the overall environmental footprint through operational efficiency and raw material choices, including recycled plastic and fibres. Lightweighting can reduce transport costs and related CO₂ emissions. For example, easypak is a large volume box with automatic bottom that amongst other things substantially reduces the amounts of material and freight space compared with standard A-boxes and the SizeMeMailer is an e-commerce envelope that can be quickly adjusted in size to reduce the amount of air shipped in transport. Recycle by developing hybrid paper and
mono-material plastic solutions that are specifically designed for recycling. StripPouch is a fully recyclable, mono- material, stand-up pouch that espouses the Cradle-to-Cradle guidelines, developed with leading German FMCG company Werner & Mertz. Also in use in the building trade is SplashBag, a water-repellent paper sack made of Mondi Advantage Protect sack kraft paper. It resists rain up to six hours and moisture ingress up to five days, while being recyclable.
