Caboll – the new frontier of anilox rollers and sleeves
S
imec Group, an Italian company that designs and manufactures anilox rollers and sleeves for converting and numerous other industries, presented important new products at K 2022 including the new Caboll-branded product line, which is innovatively distinguished by the material and deposition system used in coating. For more than three decades, innovations in anilox and sleeves have mainly involved variations in etching configurations and geometries. These have been designed to improve definition in print while maintaining a constant ink density on the printed matter, trying to keep washing operations as low as possible. According to Simec Group, if one looks closely at these innovations, especially analyzing them in a more recent time period, one can see that they have only marginally solved the problem. The structural characteristics of chromium oxide promote cell clogging and thus require frequent roller maintenance and sudden changes in transfer to the mold. The company therefore chose a different path to bring innovation to anilox and focused attentions on alternative coatings and new application systems. The result of this research, initiated in recent years, led to the birth of a new coating that allows for a surface with no porosity, hardnesses equal to or higher than chromium oxide, and excellent resistance to corrosion and abrasion. Caboll was thus born.
“The absence of porosity in the coating leads to the release of almost all the liquid contained in the cells.” says Emilio Della Torre, president and CEO of Simec Group. “This increases the density on the mold and improves dot definition at the minimums, dramatically reducing anilox cleaning.”
The new coating is particularly suitable as an alternative of galvanic chrome plating, anodizing on aluminum rollers, as an anti-stick or, in some
applications, even with surface machining. The technology used for the different Caboll variants involves the application of different types of metal coatings from the carbide family, with different compositions depending on the final application and different deposition technologies. For the printing industry, Simec Group has released a specific subfamily of the new anilox: Caboll Print. “Caboll Print has already been extensively tested in narrow web printing as well as in other printing sectors, flexographic or gravure, or for coating and laminating,” continues Emilio Della Torre. “There are currently no size limitations, as the production facility can process rolls for all different applications up to 6000 mm wide.”
In the field of printing on flexible materials and thanks to the collaboration with a leading printing press manufacturer, we have been able to register significant benefits with the use of Caboll Print: O Increased density on the printed surface and
high dot definition, about 15% higher than a ceramic anilox.
O Increased stability compared to open cell etchings.
O Substantial reduction in the number of anilox needed to cover all printing needs and, therefore, optimization of investment.
O The same anilox kit can be used with UV, water- based and solvent inks.
O The same anilox kit can be used on different substrates such as coated paper, adhesive plastic substrates and non-adhesive plastic substrates.
O Used with Cold foil, Caboll technology enables better emptying of the anilox cells and uses smaller volumetries than the ceramic roller. This results in increased resolution, easier system set- up, and substantial cost reductions on the print.
O With white ink, the emptying capabilities of the Caboll anilox allow for significantly higher opacity and coverage when compared with the use of ceramic anilox.
Simec Group has a production configuration for Caboll Print rolls consisting of six laser engraving lines and an innovative fully robotic unit for coating application.
The products in the Caboll line are suitable for use in countless applications. The combination between the deposition technologies related to different surface processing allows for different types of technical rollers. Today Simec Group supplies its engraved rollers to more than 50 application areas. According to the company, with Caboll, the amount of rollers that can potentially be supplied, in various versions, will lead to a considerable expansion of the product sectors served.
