Re-Play: innovation transforming waste into precious materials


Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives presents the market with a revolutionary range of self-adhesive materials, the first of its kind: Re-Play, born from glassine, the silicone-coated support which is usually thrown away or only partially recycled aſter the life-cycle of a label.

n this case, the glassine is instead recovered by the end users and reintroduced into the production process, to become part of the facestock of new premium labels. This premium range of self-adhesive materials signed Manter by Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives is the first example of upcycling in the labelling industry, based on a closed-loop recycling system. The siliconised glassine is collected by end users and taken back by Fedrigoni to create new high-quality labels with the material re-entering the production phase as an integral part of the adhesive facestock.


The use of recycled materials is not only seen as a necessity, but as an opportunity to innovate, create, differentiate with ever more beautiful products, in a continuous search for quality and aesthetics: what is normally considered waste can become a new valuable resource.


The project is the result of a path that the Fedrigoni Group has been undertaking for some time, which has among its 2030 goals the waste reduction in landfills and a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. In this case, the siliconised paper not only represents half the weight of the self-adhesive material, but above all it is a high quality material: it is in fact made with very pure long-fiber cellulose, which has excellent mechanical characteristics. The solution also represents an excellent example of the involvement of the entire supply chain in the circular economy process, contributing to the reduction of both the waste produced and the energy consumption. Indeed, Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives has set up a dedicated service to collect the siliconised support discarded by printers, converters, or final producers, especially in the wine & spirits sector: recovery takes place at the customers’ premises, after which the glassine is reintroduced into the production cycle, receiving a new meaning.

Re-Play is the result of a certainly revolutionary upcycling process in the labelling industry, where the final product has a higher economic value than that of the starting glassine. The waste is not only recycled, but becomes part of the decorative label, that is a more precious material, with minimal impact: each product in the new range contains up to 20% of the recovered glassine. The offer consists of a series of recycled papers in different versions and textures: from the uncoated Natural White to its coordinated Neck Label for collars and reduced diameters, from the Pearlescent to the embossed Martelé. Generating less waste or not generating it at all, is one of Fedrigoni’s objectives.
