MBO secures future of Settle paper packaging business

Long-established Settle-based business, John Roberts Holdings has completed a Management Buyout (MBO) for an undisclosed sum, supported by a team of Yorkshire advisers and funders.

With a track record of supplying a wide range of paper-based packaging materials, John Roberts Paper & Packaging is one of only a few UK companies offering the combination of both converted paper products and corrugated. The business has a focus on supplying environmentally-friendly paper packaging products, including corrugated sheetboard, pads and rolls, in a wide range of grades and formats. The company has grown to a turnover of over £13million and employs 62 staff at its Settle head office and mill.

John Roberts Holdings chairman Paul Nelson and financial director Jeremy Smith have sold their shares in the business to former operations director, Scott Littlewood, who now takes on the role of managing director, and commercial director Claire Beresford. The MBO, which completed on February 26, 2021, was part funded by HSBC. John Roberts Holdings chairman Paul Nelson said: “The MBO is another important landmark in the future of John Roberts. We are very proud of the business we have built up, our loyal customer base and hardworking team. Settle born and bred, Scott [Littlewood] has progressed from machine operative to operations director over the last nine years, so he knows the business inside out. Claire [Beresford] also has a 27- year track record in the paper industry and, together, they make a strong team.”

ABG has installed numerous DigiLase machines, equipped with various configurations, throughout the world since it was first launched in September 2018. A growing order book in 2021 is also ensuring that this continues to be another record year for ABG. Many of these machine orders, which include ABG’s automatic workflow and the inkjet digital embellishment module, are currently in production and due for installation in Mexico, the USA, the Netherlands, UK and Germany, in the coming months. DigiLase 4.0 incorporates state-of-the-art laser cutting technology, which is ideal for direct-from-web sticker and label production. A reduced web path and a decrease in the necessary lead-in/out material both help reduce waste. The minimum job length through the DigiLase has been dramatically reduced to allow the maximum flexibility in short runs, and file downloading takes milliseconds, thereby allowing several jobs to be processed simultaneously, from unwinding to laser cutting and rewinding. ABG DigiLase product manager Floriana Montella said: “One of our customers, custom stickers and labels business, StickerGiant – based in the US – has just placed an order for its sixth DigiLase 4.0, with full automatic workflow. We have a dedicated technical team... who constantly work on new developments and upgrades to suit customers’ needs. We are very excited about upcoming releases that we will be announcing shortly... so watch this space!”
