Flexible Packaging
Wipak UK says conversion machinery installation is the largest of its kind
W
ipak UK’s recently-announced multi-million-pound strategic investment in state-of-the-art conversion equipment is set to be the largest of its kind in the UK, according to one of the machinery suppliers. Italy-based Nordmeccanica Group, the biggest manufacturer of coating and laminating machinery for flexible packaging, industrial and pharmaceutical applications, will supply Wipak UK with a combi laminator that will significantly enhance its capabilities and sustainable packaging product offering, thanks to the availability of different coating heads and to the high efficiency of its unique oven design, which is modular and customisable. “The combi laminator will be the first of its kind in the UK and one of the largest installations in the country,” says Nordmeccanica vice president Vincenzo Cerciello, adding: “From a strategic point of view, the installation project is really
important to us. With it, Wipak UK will produce pure innovation and expand its sustainable packaging range, which aligns with our own goal to supply environmentally friendly solutions for a better life.
“Like Wipak UK, we are looking to the future, developing and supplying machinery with low energy consumption, minimal or no emissions and unmatched performance.” “It is fantastic to see investment like this in the UK, particularly following Brexit. It is a very big honour and we are proud to deliver this very important machine.” Richard Redfern, director of Redfern Machinery – the UK and Ireland agent for Nordmeccanica, adds: “This is not only a landmark installation for Nordmeccanica, but for Redfern as well. What is exciting is that Wipak has set the amazing target of becoming carbon neutral by 2025 and we believe that this machine can help achieve that in the UK, well ahead of everyone else.”
Wipak UK announced its £5million strategic investment in November last year. In addition to the combi laminator, the investment will see an advanced slitter and laser machine installed at the Wipak UK factory in Welshpool, Powys.
“The combination of these two machines will give Wipak UK a truly unique offering,” explains Wipak UK technical development manager Keith Gater.
He continues: “Not only will we be able to create flexible packaging solutions with significantly less plastic, a lower carbon footprint and packs which are easier to recycle, but we will open up multiple laser technology techniques and can process a wider range of material types, including those that better meet clients’ sustainability agendas. This will help us provide real benefits for our customers, consumers and the environment.”

MPS extends production floorspace D
utch press manufacturer, MPS Systems has extendeded its floorspace by renting an additional building across the street from its headquarters in Arnhem, Netherlands. The extra space will be used to extend production capacity, warehouse logistics, and secure space for future growth. MPS designs and builds printing presses for the label and flexible packaging industry. The company experienced rapid growth following a move, in 2015, from its previous headquarters in Didam to a more conveniently-located and modern building in Arnhem.
As the new assembly hall in Arnhem became too restrictive in size to accommodate the increasing demand of MPS machines sold, MPS invested considerable time searching for an alternate location in close proximity.
The new MPS facility, which boasts 1,600sq m of floorspace, will initially be used to extend the warehouse and MPS assembly lines. “Having a beautiful, spacious building
just across the street from our headquarters doesn’t just give us more space and new energy, but also plenty of new possibilities to consider,” says MPS supply chain & operations manager, Anton Spierenburg. “With our ambitious global plans, MPS is planning for more growth in the future. We’re planning to use this space for the build of our press lines but it also gives us the opportunity to redesign our main building to maximise space and efficiencies in both locations.”
MPS’ address remains the same, at Delta 100 in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The new location is Delta 134.
The company has completed a number of high-profile sales in recent months, including supplying Alu-Lids, a leading provider of aluminium lids for the largest cosmetic companies in Poland, with a fully automated MPS EFA 430 flexo press to help the business increase production, turnaround time, and quality control. Also purchased was the MPS Performance Program to ensure long-term efficiencies
and productivity from its press and operators. The flexo press will elevate Alu- Lids’ production, such as special aluminium packaging, very stable register and second pass printing for finishing effects. MPS also installed an EFA 430 fully- automated, 8-colour flexo printing press at Eson Pac’s production unit in Åstorp, Sweden in January. Additional capacity in the finishing area will be installed in March.
