Digitalisation in the packaging industry driven by sustainability needs

S

ustainability is trending in the packaging industry. Waste reduction, raw material use, light weighting, and reuse/recycle are increasing in importance for packaging companies worldwide.

However, the UN has defined the requirements for sustainability even more broadly in order to take a more holistic view of developments.

How can digitalisation support this? Digitalization can relieve companies and employees, optimize processes, and thus also support a reduction in the carbon footprint and the more conscious use of raw materials. The basis of a successful end-to-end digitization strategy is the collection and optimization of data. Detailed product features can be captured for a wide range of variants, saved and retrieved as product configuration. Information coming from machine sensors can lead to alternative machine routing across plants and warehouses, extended planning, and scrap reduction through machine learning. Raw materials, tooling, and semi-finished good can

be automatically received into the warehouse, while also alerting the purchasing department in advance with procurement needs. Automated floor conveyer systems reduce heavy manual work. Distribution departments can reduce their carbon footprint with loading and shipping route optimisation. New technologies such as blockchain open up new potentials and could, for example, enable traceability from raw material to recycling and development in machine learning will also offer further opportunities.

A DEDICATED EVENT

The Aicomp Summit presents digitalisation for the packaging industry – an event created by the Aicomp Group to enable a platform to exchange knowledge for packaging manufacturers and digitalization partners.

The Aicomp Summit will be held virtually from September 12-16, focusing on packaging industry requirements for products and processes that will contribute to overall optimisation through digitalisation. Through live presentations conducted by Aicomp and our partners, expect

to experience digitilisation through live demos of software systems and discussion panels to deepen your understanding of new technical innovations.

In addition to knowledge transfer, networking between all participants and attendees will be possible at summit.aicomp.com, with group and individual discussion sessions and direct communication through message and chat to all participants.

Participation in the Aicomp Summit is free of charge. Register now at summit.aicomp.com.
