Industry News Growing use of bio-based coatings bolsters packaging demand

A new report published by market research firm, M.Fact, reveals the global packaging coating market is anticipated to exceed a valuation of $3.1billion in 2021, and expand at an impressive CAGR of more than 6% over the forecast period of 2021 to 2031.

The market is in the growth phase of its lifecycle, having registered annual growth of 4.6% during 2016 - 2020. Market intelligence study anticipates significant potential in the market, owing to factors such as increasing consumption of packaged food and growing demand for fancy packaging in several applications. Use of coatings in the packaging industry has been the talk of the town. On a positive note, coatings have played a prominent role in ensuring packaging quality and preserving food flavour. However, in the past, the coating industry utilised synthetic coatings that tend to diffuse with the food causing long-term health problems, which has become a reason to worry. To deal with this pressing issue, over the past half-decade, manufacturers have invested billions of dollars on bio-based coatings that are human- as well as environmentally-friendly. However, bio-based coatings are expensive as compared to conventional coatings. To overcome this issue, regional governments are focusing on gradual banning of conventional non eco-friendly packaging coatings, bolstering the adoption of bio-based coatings. Aside from the high coverage of food packaging coatings, demand for electronics packaging and semiconductor coating is also on the rise. It is anticipated that this will open new avenues for packaging manufacturers. Demand from this end-use industry is also driven by the advent of temperature-sensitive packaging coatings for high performance applications.

Another key takeaway from the report is that fluoropolymer coatings are likely to be one of the highly preferred packaging coating types. Towards the end of 2031, fluropolymer coatings are estimated to reach close to US$ 690 million in revenue. Polyester coatings are also expected to experience robust demand.

Contact Originators introduces European-first super still for platemaking

Flexographic platemaker, Contact Originators, has unveiled its giant 24,000-litre distillation unit housed at the company’s new site in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester. Goliath, as the still is affectionately known by the Contact team, is the largest in use for platemaking in Europe. It offers three-times the capacity provided at Contact’s previous site in Bredbury, Stockport, which was damaged by fire in January 2020. Unlike the one at Stockport, the new still is heated by steam

instead of oil as part of Contact Originators’ commitment to creating a wholly sustainable platemaking operation. Group CEO, Steve Mulcahy said: “When developing the new site, as well as ensuring we could meet the needs of all our customers... we werededicated to ensuring that our plates are manufactured in the most resource-efficient way possible. Changing the way our still is heated has been a big part of that commitment, while enhancing health and safety on site too.” The still is housed in a separate building to the platemaking production halls on the 32,00sq ft site.

Label management solution Cloud Label Service achieves VAPT certification

The labelling platform received the vulnerability assessment and penetration testing certificate from Veave Technologies, an international management firm for ISO certifications.

Gaea Global Technologies, Inc., a supply chain and project management solutions firm, announced that its label management solution, Cloud Label Service, has achieved Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Test (VAPT) certification as part of its commitment to provide a secure, cloud-based label management solution.

Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing is one of the most comprehensive software vulnerability auditing services. VAPT is run in a non- intrusive manner following Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) application security verification standard guidelines. Areas tested include sensitive data exposure, logging monitoring, and security misconfiguration. Cloud Label Service has passed an assessment conducted by VAPT-certified engineers and the solution adheres to OWASP standards. “We want to provide our clients with the confidence that our cloud-based label management solution is safe and that their label data is secured,” said Cloud Label Service product director Jason Mancuso. He adds: “Obtaining a security certification is always an asset, and security is even more important now that remote working has increased utilisation of web-based applications.”
