 Editor’s Note

Welcome to the July/August issue of Converter. I have only been on the magazine a matter of days as I take over from Fiona Garcia as editor, and am already looking forward to getting to know you as I

learn about this fascinating industry.

I have to confess that my sum total knowledge of the sector is currently limited to the many different types of packaging that come with online shopping, but the reading I’ve done over the last week has opened my eyes to the many complexities the industry faces. Not least is the online shopping boom that has been exacerbated by the Covid pandemic. This against a backdrop of sustainability pressures that, for many manufacturers, is far easier said than done. The last 18 months will take a long time to get over, but I can see already that this industry is full of people and companies driven to push into the future and hopefully better times. The magazine ethos has always been to champion these people and companies and as such, we’ve got specialist features on Drying, Curing & UV, new articles from Labelling Solutions sphere, as well as latest technologies encouraging Sustainable Converting

I hope that you find it informative and interesting.

C&T pledges 40% EVA waste reduction

Tetra Pak and Stora Enso join forces to triple the recycling capacity of beverage cartons

C&T Matrix (C&T) has pledged to reduce manufacturing waste by up to 40% by 2022 through initiatives such as recycling selected waste streams produced during manufacture.

To achieve 40% reduction by 2022, C&T has recently invested a significant figure into new equipment including a new twin screw extruder. Simon Shenton, C&T Matrix managing director explained: “One of the key products used in our manufacturing is EVA – used in the production of our locator components. We reviewed how we might recycle manufacturing waste back into the process, rather than sending it away as waste. We recently purchased a new twin screw extruder that allows us to reprocess the waste EVA into thin tubes which can then be pelletised and put back into our manufacturing system.

“Cultivating sustainable credentials is a long-term strategy for C&T. Ongoing operational improvements, increasing the reuse of internal waste and investing in new planning and manufacturing technology is part of a wider strategy which we will continue to review and implement.”

C&T has also introduced other sustainable measures this year such as recycling throughout the factory, as well as a move to more environmentally friendly product packaging.

Tetra Pak and Stora Enso will partner to provide circular solutions to the Polish market. The investment in a complete recycling solution is set to significantly improve recycling throughout Central and Eastern Europe. The partnership, which follows a comprehensive feasibility study, sees the introduction of a large-scale carton repulping line at Stora Enso’s Ostrołęka production unit in Poland. The line will triple the annual recycling capacity of used beverage cartons in Poland from 25,000 to 75,000 tonnes. This will allow recycling of the entire volume of beverage cartons sold in the country as well as ones from neighbouring countries, including Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The total investment is €29.1million. Stora Enso will invest €17million into a new repulping line that will recover the carton fibres, while Tetra Pak, along with Plastigram, will invest a total of €12.1 million to build an additional line. This will recover and separately recycle the polymers and the aluminium, using a patented separation technology. Both lines will be operational by the beginning of 2023.

The separated materials will be used as raw materials for various end applications. Recycled fibres will be integrated into Stora Enso’s recycled board. The separated polymers and aluminium will be given new life in the form of different kinds of products, such as crates and foils. The investment aims to contribute to the development of a circular economy at a country level. It will also be fully aligned with the European Green Deal.
