Flexo Technology

Acme Graphics installs Kodak Flexcel system to enable consolidated colour management

I

n 2020, Miraclon customer Acme Graphics opened a new flexo trade shop branch in Cape Town. As a key part of the new operation, Acme purchased a Flexcel NX system from Miraclon’s channel partner Thunderbolt. The technology proved to be transformative for Acme, enabling it to launch its new cloud-based colour management concept, Acme Digital Colour. Acme managing director, Hauke Liefferink says of the concept: “This is a completely new application that allows you to utilise your flexo press in the same way you would digital – there are no restrictions on the printable colour gamut. I believe this is a radical departure from the thinking behind extended colour gamut or printing with a fixed ink set. The fidelity of the Flexcel NX Solution is key here in delivering a flexo printed result that matches the digital press – we have not been able to achieve this with any other plates.”

Founded in 1997, Acme Graphics is the fastest-growing flexo plate producer in

South Africa. With manufacturing sites in three cities, the company supplies plates for producing packaging and label products for the food supplies, pharmaceutical and sanitation industries.

Mr Hauke comments: “The addition of the Flexcel NX system has been invaluable for us and means we can now bring our new ideas to market and offer the biggest range of flexo plate choices in the South African marketplace.”

Other product benefits highlighted included the rapid set-up, enhanced colour fidelity and improved ink laydown. “We can now process conventional digital plates and flat-top dot plates with or without surface engineering,” continues Mr Liefferink. “Additionally, we can process Kodak Flexcel NX plates with ink-saving DigiCap technology.”

In addition to opening its Cape Town flexo trade shop, Acme Graphics has developed its new virtual repro offering, HDFlexoRepro.com, which allows the

company to offer its repro services and its new Acme Digital Colour technology to narrow web label printing companies worldwide. Mr Hauke concludes: “Kodak Flexcel NX technology allows Acme to deliver what I’d like to call a ‘true digital colour experience’ on a flexo press, printing without spot colours at up to 400m/min. With our HDFlexoRepro offering, we are also able to connect with a network of NX users worldwide to increase our reach.”

Morancé Soudure France and Comexi further strengthen their relationship

M

orancé Soudure France, which specialises in the production of plastic oxo-biodegradable packaging has purchased an F2 MC 10- color flexo press from Comexi, a specialist in solutions for the printing industry and the conversion of flexible packaging. This is the second Comexi machine bought by Morancé Soudure France, following its acquisition of a Comexi S1 DT slitter in 2020.

“We have decided to invest in a Comexi F2 MC 10-color press for various reasons,” explains Morancé Soudure France CEO Olivier Fedel. “First, to renew our fleet of flexographic machines. We had two old machines from another company; the Comexi F2 MC 10-color will largely replace the production of both these machines. Second, we were looking for a flexo machine with extremely short set-up times, in order to reduce our costs due to the ability to change multiple SKUs. Furthermore, the re-print system is a huge asset, and this will

be our first 10-color flexographic press.” The French company, established in 1975 making freezer bags in a garage, was created by Jean Pierre Barbier, president of Morancé Soudure France. For over 30 years, it has primarily exported products to North and West Africa. Presently, the company has over 80 employees at its production plant in Villefranche sur Saône (Rhône). With the new Comexi F2 MC 10, Morancé Soudure France will print flexible packaging for foods,

pet foods, frozen foods, garden centres, and nuclear products.

The Comexi F2 MC press has been designed to provide solutions to the demanding challenges of the flexible packaging market. The robust design, along with state-of-the-art electronics, minimises impacts and vibrations and allows converters to achieve excessive speeds without bouncing. The new drying system reduces the required energy, while ensuring a perfect drying of the substrate. Inking and doctoring, which are considered the core of flexographic printing presses, have been optimised through three different patents regarding the design of the inking system and doctor blades. The collaboration with top suppliers of video and inspection systems creates a complete automatic pressure and register set up system with minimum waste.
