Cutting and creasing – the overlooked process?
By C&T Channel Matrix group commercial director, Howard Mead
C
utting and creasing is an essential part of creating luxury packaging to add value and catch the customer’s eye. Packaging is, of course, not only for protection and security but also acts as a visual presentation of a brand to consumers. Visibility and appeal are necessary for a wide range of retail applications, from shelves at airports, department stores and supermarkets, to, increasingly, on-line. Brand owners want products to stand out to steer consumers in the direction of their products. The visual impact of folding cartons relies heavily on quality print to enhance brands. Luxury brand owners often require a further visual impact on their cartons. This can be achieved with the shape or style of the carton, or by implementing an innovative design. Embossing the board to lift a logo or adding decorative foils can all be part
of the enhancing process and help to give personality and identity to the brand, often drawing the consumers towards a premium purchase. This initial impact can not only help determine initial purchasing decisions but create visual recognition and brand loyalty in the future.
So, why is cutting and creasing so imperative to packaging success? This is a highly-skilled part of carton manufacture. If this process is badly executed, it can have devastating consequences to the appearance of the carton, the protection of the contents, and can even create a perception of under valuing the product or brand itself. Poor cutting or creasing can result in packaging waste in production, during transit or at the point of sale, and can ultimately lead to product waste. It is, therefore, essential that this is done as
effectively and efficiently as possible. C&T Matrix wants customers to feel confident about cutting and creasing, even when the most challenging print finishes have been applied. As a UK-based manufacturer with subsidiaries and partners all around the world, C&T is well placed globally to advise carton manufacturers on new methods and technologies that add value to their product.
C&T offers a vast range of products that die makers use to make the cutting, stripping and blanking tooling – everything required to enhance the visual impact of the carton, whilst maximising customers production time. For example, our ejection rubber eliminates board debris and promotes a clean edge, and the profile rubbers are
Middleton Paper geared up to meet demand for bespoke sheeting service
M
iddleton Paper is poised to meet the demand for bespoke paper sizes following the closure of LumiPaper’s Mendlesham plant. With three Pasaban sheeters, as well as rewinding, guillotining and rewrapping facilities, the West Midlands company is well placed to offer alternative options for bespoke and standard sheet sizes with fast turnaround. Its versatile set-up enables Middleton Paper to sheet, from sizes as low as 300 x 310mm, up to 1850 x 2200mm. Vision Paper and Board is the merchant division of Middleton Paper Group and provides customers with bulk-packed and ream-wrapped options across a range of coated and uncoated papers and boards. Quartz Triple Coated Gloss and Silk, Middleton’s long-standing brand produced at Burgo Ardennes mill, leads its coated paper range. Managing director, Jason
Middleton says: “We have been working with Burgo for over 20 years and are pleased to be able to promote our Quartz range as a viable, permanent alternative to Lumi. As we hold extensive stocks of cutter reels in our warehouse in Walsall, we are ideally placed to offer bespoke sizes to printers with faster turnaround times than can be achieved by paper mills from outside the UK.” There are many advantages for printers buying bespoke sizes, not least the savings in waste and ultimate reduction in paper costs, which can be considerable over a period of time.
“In these uncertain times we are all looking for something we can depend on,” says Mr Middleton. “Quartz Gloss and Silk has been around for a long time and is now well established in the market and it will continue to be an important part of our offer.” Holding the Quartz Triple range in cutter
reels is essential to Vision Paper’s objective of being able to respond rapidly to customer requirements in a rapidly-changing environment, especially now that LumiPaper is no longer an option for printers requiring bespoke sizes.
Vision Paper and Board sales manager, Simon Cartwright explains: “There have been so many changes to supply recently that it can be difficult to keep up: paper mills reducing capacity and switching production to other grades may make viable sense to them, but it can leave printers stuck, especially when they have become accustomed to a certain paper or service level... We don’t know what the future holds and there is now fear of lengthy delays at UK ports [but] our extensive UK stock ensures we are prepared for any eventuality.”
