Arjowiggins meets call for sustainable packaging with translucent barrier paper

A

s part of its mission to help create a circular economy society, paper manufacturer Arjowiggins has launched Sylvicta – a new sustainable alternative to plastics in packaging. Sylvicta is a translucent, functional barrier paper that has been designed to preserve the quality of food and cosmetics just as well as conventional plastics – all the while ensuring limited impact on the environment. The paper is fully recyclable, compostable, marine degradable and made

from renewable raw materials. Sylvicta’s distinct advantage is its very high barrier to oxygen – the leading cause of food spoilage – which means it can reduce food waste by prolonging shelf life during the transportation, retail and consumer phases of the value chain. Through precision fibre refining, Arjowiggins’ experienced R&D teams have developed the translucent paper with a natural bonding, without the need for any harmful chemicals. The result is a paper with a barrier to oxygen, aroma, mineral oils and fatty foodstuffs.

Sylvicta can be foil-stamped, glued, embossed, printed in offset, gravure, and flexography, metallised, or coated with heat or cold-sealable materials. Additionally, Arjowiggins is working continuously with packaging converters to open up an endless array of applications – from pouches for dry fruits, bags for salads, sachets for solid soap, sacks for pet food and flow-packs

for chocolate bars, all the way through to metallised versions of Sylvicta for butter or margarine packaging.

Answering the market’s need for sustainable alternatives to single-use packaging and flexible laminates, Sylvicta offers brands a quality barrier packaging solution that helps them reduce or even eradicate the use of plastics in packaging. The ideal solution for creating a globally sustainable, circular economy, Sylvicta can integrate into existing recycling schemes. Arjowiggins managing director of the translucent papers division, Christophe Jordan explains: “Despite the ongoing movement towards more sustainable packaging solutions, plastics still remain a popular choice, largely for practical reasons... “With Sylvicta, such solutions can be turned into fully-recyclable, compostable and biodegradable paper packaging.

Mondi reduces plastic use and carbon footprint with paper-based nappy pack

he packaging and paper giant has launched a new paper EcoWicketBag for Drylock Technologies’ baby nappy ranges; bringing sustainable paper-based packaging to the hygiene market globally. Global hygiene products manufacturer, Drylock approached Mondi to create a more sustainable alternative to its existing plastic nappy packaging that would travel well, have strong shelf-appeal, and protect the product – while also using renewable resources and significantly reducing its CO2 footprint. “We approached Mondi because of their expertise in paper packaging and their extensive knowledge of the global hygiene market. Consumers are looking for more sustainable packaging that is kinder to the planet without compromising on the integrity of the product. With the EcoWicketBag, consumers can be confident of product quality and packaging

T

sustainability,” says Drylock Technologies R&D director, Werner Van Ingelgem. A key advantage of using paper-based solutions is the recyclability of paper and that consumers are more likely to know how to dispose of it correctly. The EcoWicketBag can be placed in existing paper streams, even in countries with the strictest recycling regulations, thereby supporting the circular

economy. An EcoWicketBag made out of fully compostable materials is also available. Mondi also ensured that EcoWicketBag fits with Drylock Technologies’ existing plant processes, meaning it is the first paper wicket bag range that can be filled and sealed on existing machines.

“We work closely with our clients using our customer-centric EcoSolutions approach to create packaging that is fit for purpose – using paper where possible, plastic when useful. With Drylock Technologies it was key to reduce the amount of plastic used, meet our customer’s sustainability targets and protect the products for consumers. By liaising closely and asking the right questions from the outset, we have been able to deliver on all of the above,” says Mondi COO paper bags, Claudio Fedalto.
