Sustainable Converting with Sonoco’s Packaging Solutions in Europe

Kieren France, vice president of sales and marketing at Sonoco Consumer Europe

n today’s world, where environmental consciousness is more crucial than ever, the circular economy has emerged as a transformative approach to tackling global sustainability challenges. By minimising waste, maximising resource efficiency and creating closed-loop systems, the circular economy offers a pathway to a sustainable ecosystem. Recognising the urgency of this shift, Sonoco has positioned itself as a leader in sustainable packaging, addressing climate change not just through energy efficiency improvements, but also through a comprehensive materials transition.

The production, use and disposal of industrial materials accounts for a significant share of global CO2 emissions. To achieve net-zero targets, it is no longer sufficient to focus solely on energy conservation; a holistic approach to materials management is essential. This involves implementing innovative, lower-impact material production methods and adopting circular-economy principles that optimise material usage and encourage reuse. Sonoco’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its multifaceted efforts to tackle these challenges head-on.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sonoco’s sustainability strategy extends far beyond emission reduction. The company invests heavily in energy efficiency, renewable energy and the development of innovative packaging solutions that balance functionality with environmental stewardship. By designing packaging that aligns with circular-economy principles, Sonoco not only reduces waste, but also sets a high standard for the packaging industry.

Kieren France, vice president of sales and marketing at Sonoco Consumer Europe, reflects on the company’s journey. “Over the past 18 months, we have collaborated with various customers to introduce a range of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions. Notable examples include Pringles’ groundbreaking ‘designed for recycling’ paper-based tube, the 95 percent paper- based can for Nestlé’s coffee products, Daddy Sugar, a popular French sugar brand that replaced its plastic container with a Sonoco cardboard container, and Chocolates Valor’s incorporation of Sonoco’s GreenCan solution into their packaging. These initiatives highlight our commitment to driving positive change in the packaging industry towards a more sustainable future.”

AWARD-WINNING INNOVATION Sonoco’s dedication to sustainable packaging solutions has been officially recognised. The company’s innovative EnviroCan has garnered multiple prestigious awards for its recyclable design and contributions to environmental sustainability. In 2024, the EnviroCan was recognised at the PAC Global Awards for its sustainability credentials, celebrated for its environmental impact at the Environmental Packaging Awards in collaboration with Kellanova, and honoured with The Grocer Award in partnership with Marigold Health Foods. These accolades build on the achievement of winning the Sustainable Innovation Award at the 2024 CPI Paper Industry Gold Awards.

France emphasises the significance of these milestones. “EnviroCan’s sustainable design and technical innovation exemplify our mission to create packaging that not only extends product shelf life, but also supports recycling processes and meets the sustainability goals of customers. This continued recognition underscores our dedication to environmental responsibility and circular economy principles.”

COLLABORATION AND LEADERSHIP Sonoco’s success in sustainable packaging stems from its collaborative approach. By working closely with customers, stakeholders and industry partners, Sonoco ensures that its solutions meet the evolving needs of businesses and consumers alike. Sonoco’s commitment to sustainability demonstrates that profitability and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. The circular economy is not merely a theoretical concept, but a practical framework that companies can adopt to reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining business growth. Sonoco’s activity in this area sets a benchmark for other businesses, proving that embracing circular practices and investing in green materials are not only viable but essential for long-term success.

PAVING THE WAY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

By prioritising environmental stewardship and aligning its goals with those of its customers, Sonoco is paving the way for meaningful progress in the packaging industry. Looking ahead, its vision is clear; to drive positive change through sustainable innovation, inspire other industry players to follow suit and contribute to a world where economic growth and environmental health coexist harmoniously. With initiatives like EnviroCan and collaborations that reflect a shared commitment to sustainability, Sonoco is not just responding to the challenges of today, but actively shaping the solutions of tomorrow.

The journey towards a circular economy is complex, but Sonoco is helping its customers to achieve circularity as they convert to more sustainable packaging, including Sonoco’s paper-based solutions.
