Optimising business for variable digitally printed packaging

he carton converting and flexible packaging markets are proving to be attractive print markets for the

future. And that isn’t just opinion; data from Technavio states that the folding carton market is positioned to grow by 12.83 million tons from 2019 to 2023. That is a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of a little more than 5%. That settles it, it is a market your organization either wants to enter or grow their market share. But…how do you stand out from the competition and win the customers’ business? Consider variable, personalised, localised,

and/or regionalised offerings for your current or future packaging customers. Let us take a small detour so I can explain. Much of the packaging market is still medium to long run lengths and a combination of offset and digital print technology. Digitally printed packaging and the technology to support it continues to grow; it also opens the door to many opportunities like short runs, customization and quick turnaround from order to delivery. Variable packaging can be complex, but it can also be a simple offering that you make more interesting, attention grabbing and a true market differentiator as you hone your organisation’s expertise. Consider having the confidence to offer packaging buyers the opportunity to easily

customise their packaging based on the location they are delivering them. It could be as simple as by country, by city or by neighbourhood. Offer them something different for each region.

Expanding on that concept, if you have

customer data, perhaps you want to personalise their package. Great for the gift and luxury goods market—retail too. Or, perhaps your buyer knows what specific stores or locations they are drop shipping to; make their packages special and elevate your customers brand appeal. Sounds great, but seems complicated. We have the solution. This is where you need to consider the

power of PDF workflow enhancement and embellishment. Something Solimar Systems has been offering other markets for nearly 30 years. Leverage a Windows server environment to take a PDF design file and, literally, do all the things we mention above with an easy-to-use software solution. Plus, you can also add full tracking capabilities with the ability for your customers to see where their project is in your production process. It really isn’t as complex as it sounds, especially when you do all the customisation right before delivering the file to the packaging press. It is definitely worth investigating and optimising your environment for success.

estRock Company, a provider of differentiated paper and packaging solutions, has selected

ABB to replace its dry end drive system. This includes upgrades to its PM12 paper machine drives, motors and the installation of the ABB Ability System 800xA control system at its mill in Longview, Washington, USA. Installation and commissioning of the project is planned for completion by year- end 2020. “ABB was chosen for this project based on

the customer’s positive experience with our drives systems at its Longview mill and other WestRock sites,” says Steve St. Jarre, head of business development, Pulp and Paper, Process Industries, ABB. “We were able to provide a cost-effective, phased approach to this upgrade project. We set up a new 800xA system to control both existing and new drives. The existing drives can be replaced as needed and use the same control platform as the mill evolves.” The new ABB drive system will have a

smaller footprint and require minimal parts. The modular drives are extremely compact, but with all of the parts easily accessible. This not only reduces interruption to production for planned and unplanned maintenance, but also reduces spare part inventories. “With our aim of improving reliability and

productivity, without the need for extensive downtime during installation, ABB offered a practical approach to achieve our goals,” says Rick Siragusa, project manager at WestRock. “We look forward to moving forward with the replacement.”
