2022 REVIEW

Veganism was another trend that appeared to grow rapidly this year with the Vegan Society revealing that one in four people had actively cut back on the animal products they are consuming, with many switching to plant-based or vegan diets. There are now a growing number of vegan friendly products available to the vending sector. Finally, with the implementation of the sugar levy and the

requirements of CQUIN, the industry has seen a marked impact on the SKUs offered through vending.

Experts believe that in a post-Covid workplace micro markets are

likely to play a much greater role to provide refreshments, as there is likely to be less demand for the traditional catering or 24-hour canteen services. This is where vending machines naturally become the ideal solution, as they can cater for these smaller numbers of people effectively, at a much lower cost than having a fully staffed canteen. According to AVA chief executive David Llewellyn, businesses are now looking to adopt micro markets into the workplace, in order to make it a more attractive place to be and to encourage the return to office-based working. Micro markets allow this, while also enabling businesses to continue the flexibility that so many employees want, which will also aid employee retention in the long term.

COFFEE-TO-GO There are many advantages for the coffee to go market which is expected to grow in the coming years but the sector also faces its fair share of challenges. Census data shows that to-go coffee

As consumers have become more comfortable with the use of smart and cashless technologies, this has opened the door for more cashless catering. It has also enabled the introduction of more automated retail opportunities – such as micro market vending – a custom designed vending market or mart with a self-checkout kiosk. grow quickly with around 25% growth from 2020 to 2021 and around 410 now installed across the UK.

market gained a total base of 27,900 machines, which is a 7% increase since 2020, and generated £570 million in 2021. Costa Express has the largest market share with almost 12,000 machines with other retailers such as Nescafe, Starbucks, Tchibo and Lavazza sharing an additional 11,000 machines. Consumption from these machines increased by 7% in 2021, highlighting the ongoing demand for quick service coffee. However, with larger suppliers monopolising the prime locations for vending machines, workplace settings and leisure centres, it’s making it more difficult for smaller suppliers to make an impact. Rising costs have also had an impact with an average price rise of 5% for drinks and product revenue falling on the whole compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, in spite of the hurdles, experts including the AVA see untapped opportunities for the vending and automated retail as the need to diversify and keep up with changing consumer demands pave the way for new ideas and innovations.
