NEWS | Industry Events The planet is a top priority
For the first time ever, more consumers surveyed globally for Innova’s Lifestyle & Attitude Survey, say health of the planet is their top global concern, rather than health of the population. Close to half of consumers are cutting food waste and 63% say
that they would like to eat at a restaurant that actively prevents or reduces food waste. As many as 20% to 25% also adjusted their product choices for environmental reasons such as choosing foods with environmentally friendly packaging and choosing sustainably grown products. Product launches are positioned to meet consumer
expectations. Those carrying environmental claims are growing at three times the pace of total food and beverage activity. Ethical claims regarding the environment increased their share of total food and beverage launches. Growth is even faster for specific issues. In the five years ending Q3 2021, launches of food and beverages using upcycled ingredients rose at 122%, compared
with 59% for products using recycled plastic, 49% for products with water saving claims, 47% for products carrying carbon emissions claims and 36% for palm oil free products. Europe drives claims regarding palm oil; 88% of all launches with “palm oil free” claims were made in Europe. Cost can be a barrier to shopping with the environment in
mind. Nearly three in 10 consumers say that it’s more expensive to buy more environmentally friendly products. Still, over half of consumers say they are willing to pay extra for food and beverage products that are devoted to solving global issues such as plastic waste (64%), ocean pollution (63%), and food waste (62%). Clear communications from manufacturers are essential. “In
our Innova Trends Survey 2021, 55% of consumers globally say that there are too many environmental labels and they don’t know what to look for,” says Lu Ann Williams, Insights Director at Innova Market Insights. “Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of consumers surveyed globally agree or strongly agree that they prefer one label that captures the complete impact on the environment over multiple labels.”
The WHA to stage first in person AGM
The Water Dispenser & Hydration Association (the WHA) is holding its first in person AGM and General Meeting since the formation of the trade body in January 2020. The event, taking place in the West Midlands on 22 September 2022, is for WHA members only. Phillipa Atkinson-Clow, general manager
of the WHA, said: “In surveys, many members name ‘networking’ as one of the benefits of WHA membership which they most value. It is therefore so pleasing to be able to hold our first face-to-face meeting for members in order to provide this aspect of our service to the industry. This is more than just an AGM. Our General Meeting is an interactive seminar and workshop, effectively, delivering information on what’s new in the sector as well as providing a forum for discussion. Members have the opportunity to continue networking by joining in a members’ supper.”
Money raised because of the
General Meeting will be donated to the Association’s chosen charity, Just a Drop. Members are being asked to make a voluntary contribution to the charity when they book to attend. The WHA is currently raising money for the industry’s 7th water source in Africa. The event will be enhanced by an
exhibition area where supplier members of the WHA can display new products and exhibit details of services they offer. By exhibiting they will automatically be donating to Just a Drop.
As well as the essential formalities of
the AGM, including the election of non- executives to the Executive Council, plans will be revealed about the conference and trade show planned for March 2023 – a keenly awaited event which, like the AGM, has not taken place since the WHA’s formation.
Although this is a members-only event, non-members and potential members will have the opportunity to attend a WHA event in March 2023 for what will become the annual conference and trade show.” Members wishing to attend the AGM and General meeting in September need to pre- book via the general manager.
The WHA will be raising money through its General Meeting to support Just a Drop fund water sources in Africa
